What is the purpose of this research?
The purpose of this research project is to investigate people’s intentions to initiate and receive handsfree phone calls while driving.
Are you looking for people like me?
You are invited to participate in this research project because you are aged 18 years or older, currently living in Australia, drive at least once per week, own a mobile phone, and hold a valid Australian (or international equivalent) driver’s licence that permits handsfree phone use while driving.
What will you ask me to do?
Participation will involve completing an online questionnaire with mostly items asking you to make a rating on a scale (e.g., strongly agree – strongly disagree) that will take approximately 15-20 minutes of your time.
Are there any risks for me in taking part?
There are some risks associated with your participation in this research project. These include:
- Potentially admitting to handsfree phone use while driving when you do not hold a licence that permits you to do so. However, you will not be required to provide any specific details (e.g., time, location) where you engaged in phone use behaviours and can choose to skip any questions you feel uncomfortable answering. Additionally, you are only eligible to participate in the study if you do hold a licence that allows you to use your mobile phone handsfree while driving.
- You may also experience discomfort if you, or someone you know, has been involved in a car crash, especially if this was related to distracted driving caused by mobile phone use. You may also experience discomfort answering questions about the riskiness of driving and your feelings about your personal driving abilities. If answering such questions is of concern, you are advised to consider not taking part in the study. If you begin the survey but experience any discomfort, you may skip the question or exit the survey at any time without comment or penalty.
Are there any benefits for me in taking part?
It is expected that this research project will not directly benefit you. The outcomes of the research, however, may benefit the wider community by enhancing current understandings of the underlying factors influencing people’s intentions to initiate and receive handsfree phone calls while driving
Will I be compensated for my time?
To recognise your contribution, for completing the survey the research team is offering you the chance to win one of eight $25 Coles eGift cards for completing the survey.
