What is the purpose of this research?
The purpose of this research is to develop and test a new scale to measure how consumers feel and react when they miss out on something (e.g. an event they couldn't get tickets to). We call this response 'RoMO' (Reaction of Missing Out). The aim of this project is to create and validate a scale that capture this range of reactions across different consumer contexts (Eg. retail, events, experiences).
Are you looking for people like me?
The research team is inviting 20 participants, aged 16 and above to describe times they missed out on something they wanted to purchase or secure access to, and how they felt. Participants will be screened with the question: have you ever missed out on purchasing something or gaining access to an experience you wanted due to it being sold out or unavailable?
What will you ask me to do?
Your participation will involve answering a series of questions about a times or times= that you have missed out on purchasing something or gaining access to an experience you wanted due to it being sold out or unavailable, how it made you feel, and how your reacted.
Are there any risks for me in taking part?
Possible risk in relation to participating in this study include:
- questions triggering recall of negative experience, hence you may consider not to participate.
If you do agree to participate you can withdraw from participation in the research project without comment or penalty.
Are there any benefits for me in taking part?
It is expected that this research project will not benefit you directly. However, it may benefit the early development of a RoMO scale through exploratory item generation. As this research is expected to be the first scale of its kind, a validated scale will enable future research into consumer responses to scarcity and exclusion across contexts such as events, retail, and entertainment.
Will I be compensated for my time?
No, but we would very much appreciate your participation in this research.
I am interested - what should I do next?
