What is the purpose of this research?

The purpose of this research project is to investigate passengers' intentions to speak up to a driver who is driving while tired. This study is also interested in assessing whether psychological factors, such as attitudes, beliefs, personality, and relationship satisfaction with partners and friends influence a passenger’s intentions to speak up to a driver who they notice is tired

Are you looking for people like me?

You are invited to participate in this research project because you are aged 18 years or older, currently have or have previously had a romantic partner, and have been a passenger in a vehicle at least once in the last month.

What will you ask me to do?

Your participation will involve completing a 30-minute (approximately) online questionnaire. The questionnaire will include general demographic questions such as your age, gender, and license status; personality questions, as well as questions measuring your relationship satisfaction with your partner and close friend. As part of this questionnaire, you will be asked to read three short written scenarios and then asked about your attitudes and intentions to speak up to a driver who is driving while tired.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

There are some risks associated with your participation in this research project. These include:

  • the possibility that you might experience discomfort in answering questions related to driving if you have had a negative driving experience, such as memories of a crash that you were involved in or someone you know was involved in a crash
  • possible discomfort in answering questions related to reflecting on your relationship satisfaction.

Individual discretion is advised when considering whether participation in the survey is appropriate given your personal experiences.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

It is expected that this research project will not benefit you directly. The outcomes of the research, however, may benefit further research aimed at reducing risky behaviour on the road and designing interventions targeted towards drivers who may be driving while tired.

Will I be compensated for my time?

To recognise your contribution, should you choose to participate, the research team is offering the chance to win 1 of 4 $50 online e-Gift Card vouchers (purchased from GiftPay.com).

I am interested - what should I do next?
