What is the purpose of this research?

This research project is being conducted as part of an honours study for Lisa Galamaga. The purpose of the project is to determine parental intention to allow youth participation in contact sport. Participants do not need to be parents of children.

Are you looking for people like me?

You are invited to participate in this research project if you are:

  • 18 years or older
  • a member of the public or research participation pool (SONA)
  • fluent in English.

What will you ask me to do?

Participation will be online and will take about 30mins. Ensure to complete the study in a quiet environment, free from distraction. It is preferable that you participate on a device with a large screen (i.e. PC or laptop).

You will be asked to complete a survey regarding your demographic information. You will then be asked to complete a survey that will consider your attitudes and beliefs about participation in sport. Questions will be framed around a hypothetical son and daughter. This section will include items such as "I would be likely to sign my hypothetical son up to AFL".

Your participation in this research is entirely voluntary.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

This study is considered low risk. However, exposure to written information about a brain/head injury or thinking about possible injuries to your children/imaginary children may cause some discomfort. You will be asked to read a fictitious scenario and respond how you would expect to think/feel following this. The information provided does not reflect real-life medical advice or outcomes. If this is of concern to you, you are advised not to participate in the research project.

QUT provides limited counselling services for participants who may experience discomfort or distress because of their participation in a research project. Should you wish to access this service call the clinic receptionist on 07 3138 0999 (Monday–Friday, 9am–5pm), QUT Psychology and Counselling Clinic, 44 Musk Avenue, Kelvin Grove, and indicate that you are a research participant. Alternatively, Lifeline provides access to online, phone, or face-to-face support; call 13 11 14 for 24-hour telephone crisis support. If you are aged up to 25, you can also call the Kids Helpline on 1800 551 800.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

It is not expected that this research project will directly benefit you. However, the outcomes may benefit individuals who have or will experience a brain or head injury, and the clinicians who work in this field. You can request a brief summary of the outcomes of the study by providing your email address at the end of the study via a second, external survey.

Will I be compensated for my time?

In acknowledgement of your time, we are offering 0.5 Sona point (eligible QUT students) or a chance to win one of four $50 Visa gift cards.
