What is the purpose of this research?

This project aims to improve the way we measure TBI knowledge and perceptions.

Are you looking for people like me?

We are looking for volunteers to complete an online survey of no more than 30 minutes about knowledge and perceptions of traumatic brain injury (TBI). You are eligible to participate if you are above the age of 18 years, are fluent with English and have not had TBI.

What will you ask me to do?

This is an online study. In part one (approx. 30 minutes), you will be asked if you consent to volunteer for the study. If you agree to take part, you will complete a questionnaire. The preliminary questions will ask about you (e.g., age, education, sex, knowledge of TBI). Then you will be asked to indicate your agreement with statements about TBI, including how it can affect people (e.g. 'it is common for people to experience changes in behaviour after a traumatic brain injury' or 'people with a traumatic brain injury can be productive members of society').

The study has an optional second component. In the second component you can repeat the survey after reading supplied information (e.g. a few short-written paragraphs). If you participate in this component, you will be randomly allocated to one of three information conditions and you may receive information about TBI (e.g. like discharge advice) or another topic (e.g., discharge advice for non-TBI injury). This component will take an additional 30 minutes (maximum). All TBI statements are taken from previously published studies, and the information that you will see is based on published materials.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

This study is considered low risk. However, answering questions about TBI and reading about it or other injuries may cause some discomfort. If this is of concern to you, you are advised not to participate in the research project. You may also skip questions you do not want to answer or stop participating.

QUT provides limited counselling services for participants who may experience discomfort or distress because of their participation in a research project.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

It is not expected that this research project will directly benefit you. However, this research may help to improve the way we measure of TBI knowledge and perceptions. This could help us find ways to improve TBI understanding, which in turn could help people who live with TBI.

At the end of the study, you we will ask you if you would like to receive a summary of the study results, or SONA credit (if eligible).

Will I be compensated for my time?

Eligible students may receive SONA credit for participation.

I am interested - what should I do next?
