Raising the bar on research training
The training is delivered via short, online, flexible, and easily accessible modules.
Each module is designed to enhance transferable skill development, promote interactions within each cohort, and develop awareness of issues and themes relevant to internationally mobile research graduates.
More than 28,000 students have registered for training, from universities across Australia, Pacific, Asia, and New Zealand. e-Grad School maintains global relevance with increasing student enrolments from across the sector.
Online modules
e-Grad School modules are designed and delivered by subject experts and are tailored to research students and early career researchers (ECR) looking to develop their communication, digital capacity, innovation, transdisciplinary, cross cultural, career development and industry engagement skills.
To succeed in an increasingly diverse workplace, the next generation of researchers will need to be more employer, innovation, and industry ready.
The online modules are typically delivered over 5 weeks and include pedagogically designed engagement strategies that respond to the time constraints of active researchers.
Institutional licenses
e-Grad School modules are available at no cost to QUT higher degree by research (HDR) students and early career researchers, and at low cost to research students from other universities. Approved partners can access sample module offerings at no cost, to experience the quality of the training offered prior to any financial commitment.

Commercialisation and entrepreneurship
Explore how to transform your research into impactful innovations, moving from ideas to market potential. This module provides researchers with essential knowledge in both commercialisation and entrepreneurship, equipping you to identify the commercial potential of your research and navigate the pathway to market. Gain insights into intellectual property, financing options, market dynamics, and models for research commercialisation. Learn how to facilitate the growth of innovative ideas, understand the role of entrepreneurs, and connect with end-users to address their needs. Whether you're aiming to drive social, economic, or technological change, this module offers the tools to support your journey from research to revenue.
Introduction to coding for researchers
This practical, hands-on module introduces the core web development languages HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. Through guided activities, you will learn how these languages work together to create interactive and well-designed webpages. As you progress, you will build your own website from scratch, developing an online career portfolio that showcases your skills and experience. The portfolio will include structured content such as tables, quizzes, and custom webpage layouts, giving you practical experience in designing, styling, and adding interactivity to web content.
Leadership and communication
This module allows you to explore the key concepts of leadership and communication, and considers how this information can be contextualised in your own research environment. We will also explore ways to translate knowledge of leadership and communication into better self-management and professional engagements.
Mental wellbeing for researchers
This module explores the mental wellbeing landscape for higher degree researchers (HDRs) and the common challenges experienced throughout the research journey. It introduces practical, evidence-based strategies for recognising and managing stress, building resilience, and maintaining mental wellbeing over time. Moderated by a clinical psychologist, the module connects theory with real-world research experiences and provides a supportive, confidential learning environment.
Project management
Learn how to apply project management practices to your research. This module introduces you to the foundations and principles of project management. We explore the scope and phases of projects and consider how your projects can be better managed. This module combines theory with practice, as we apply new-found knowledge to real projects. We will consider the challenges you may encounter in projects and the best way to achieve your project goals.
Write your journal article in twelve weeks
This module will give you practical experience writing a research article for a peer-reviewed journal. You will work on turning your draft paper into a quality article to submit for publication. Join us if you want to get your publication written and submitted to a journal by the end of the module. We will help you to stay focused and engaged in a step-by-step process and you will receive feedback from other researchers and your moderator.
Semester 1B 2026

Communication and collaboration
This module will address the specific communication skills required of you as a researcher, to collaborate with a broad and complex diversity of stakeholders. Navigating our way in this complex communication milieu can be confusing and demanding. We will present and examine these and other related key communication items, critical to effective communication within the world of local and global collaborative initiatives.
Explore your career potential
This module introduces contemporary strategies to help you enhance your career potential as a researcher. You will identify your strengths, better understand the HDR job market, and learn how to use professional networks to create career opportunities. Through practical activities and reflection, you will examine the skills and experiences you bring to future employers, collaborators, and investors, and finish the module with greater clarity and confidence in your HDR career direction.
Financial and legal concepts for researchers
This module will help researchers navigate the crucial, and sometimes overwhelming, world of financial and legal aspects of research projects. You will learn about various funding environments and how researchers fit into this environment. The module will also examine strategies to find and apply for funding, completing contracts and the practical aspects of costing budgets.
Preparing for your HDR internship
This module helps higher degree by research students confidently prepare for an internship, guiding you from identifying and securing opportunities through to succeeding in the internship environment. You will learn how to self-source internships, prepare effective applications, and approach interviews with confidence. It also clarifies your rights, responsibilities, and professional expectations during your HDR internship. By the end, you will be well prepared to make the most of your internship experience and turn it into meaningful career outcomes.
Presenting your research
This module is about creating and delivering research presentations that will have your audience enthralled and informed. This module will help you explain your complex ideas simply, give you confidence in your own skills and offer insights into how the professionals do it. Enrol in this module if you want to inform and inspire your audience in research milestone, competition and conference presentations. Practice your new skills in a supportive environment with rich peer feedback.
Research integrity in practice
This module explores common research integrity issues through realistic scenarios drawn from research practice, including authorship, plagiarism, and data management. You will work through these situations collaboratively with your peers, developing practical problem-solving skills in a supportive learning environment. You will examine key ethical principles and consider how they apply to real-world research contexts. By engaging with practical examples and discussion, you will strengthen your ability to make informed, responsible decisions in your own research practice.
Semester 2A 2026

Critical and creative thinking
This course involves learning more about critical and creative thinking, and how applying critical and creative thinking approaches, techniques and tools can assist you in your research journey. We will examine conventional accounts of critical and creative thinking and compare approaches to across field of practice. We will also consider the balance of logic, knowledge, belief, behaviour, and action involved in critical and creative thinking.
Digital competencies for researchers
In today’s workplace, research graduates require a set of digital practices, behaviours and identities that inform their academic and professional practices. This module provides you with the tools and knowledge to communicate, collaborate and innovate within your research area and your career. We will look at the impact of big data and datasets on research, and utilise data analytics, digital creation, and data visualisation.
Global sustainability
This module is designed to enable you to critically reflect on how your personal, professional and academic practice relates to global sustainability. We will explore types of capital, consumption patterns, sustainable community initiatives and environment issues. The module will assist you in understanding and investigating the implications and potential application of your research in the context of global sustainability.
Transdisciplinarity in research
This module introduces participants to an emerging research practice known as transdisciplinarity. You will learn how to communicate and collaborate with researchers from your own and different disciplines, how to better define a research problem and what skills you will need to be effective at these. You will also develop a better understanding of how to engage with broader stakeholders in the research context, including industry and how to see research through the lens of an end user. This is an invaluable module for all new and emerging researchers.

Emotional Intelligence for researchers
This course will provide you with strategies for accelerating significant change by shifting your mindset, behaviour, and actions to accomplish your objectives. You will learn how to identify your values in order to effectively manage your personal life and research career more efficiently through enhanced self-awareness, self-management, and emotional intelligence.
Know your job market value
Redefine your professional identity and better understand the true value of your skillset. This module allows you to explore relevant industry fields, create tailored documents and pitches to suit industry needs, and better understand the job market value of your skills and experiences. This is a great way to continue building some of the skills gained from the Explore your career potential module, to help you clarify your future direction.
Mental wellbeing for researchers
Explore how, why and when your mental state may affect you and also those around you. This online module will provide you with basic strategies to support helpful thinking habits, raise awareness of mental wellbeing issues, and understand where to access further help. You'll explore definitions of mental wellbeing in both general and research contexts, what contributes to poorer and better mental wellbeing, and how this knowledge can be applied to your own life. You'll learn how to recognise the early signs of mental wellbeing at risk and how to apply long-term strategies for maintaining and enhancing mental wellbeing beyond the research period and to your personal life and later career.
Practice-led research in creative arts, media and design
The aim of this module is to familiarise students working in the creative arts, media and design with the methodological research design implications of undertaking enquiry through practice. While the emphasis is given to areas of creative practice, the general scope and pathways can be applied to research based in any form of professional, artistic, creative or innovative practice.
Public policy
Public policy exists somewhere between order and chaos. In this module, we will be exploring this contested space to consider what public policy incorporates and how it is implemented. This module is about learning more about public policy and how this information can be contextualised in your research environment.
Maximise your research with GenAI
Discover practical ways to use Gen AI responsibly and effectively in your research. This 5-week module introduces helpful prompts, tools, common challenges, and key principles for using AI in a research context. You’ll have the chance to test approaches that support clearer thinking, stronger writing, better communication, career planning and more constructive feedback techniques. Each week provides opportunities to test approaches, reflect on their suitability, and evaluate when AI adds value - and when it does not.
Register
Each moderated e-Grad School module runs for five weeks. Participants should plan to dedicate approximately 3-5 hours per week in their own suitable time to:
- engaging with module content
- participating in online discussions
- zoom in to the week 3 live session
- completing a short weekly quiz.
e-Grad School modules are designed to be flexible and to fit around the busy lives of researchers and research students. However, carefully consider whether you can commit this time before registering.
If you are able to meet the time requirements, complete your registration details. If not, your place will be offered to another participant, and we warmly encourage you to join us in a future offering when your workload allows. A direct link to your module(s) will be provided shortly before Week 0 begins.
