Former principal of Brisbane Girls Grammar School Judith Hancock, AM, was conferred with an honorary doctorate at the Faculty of Education graduation ceremony on April 2.

The award recognised Mrs Hancock's contribution to education at a State and national level.

At the graduation ceremony, QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Dennis Gibson said Mrs Hancock had made an enormous contribution to the development of education in Queensland and was one of the state's outstanding educators.

"She has consistently demonstrated a commitment to equity and social justice in education, particularly for girls," he said.

Mrs Hancock has a Bachelor of Science from the University of Sydney, a Graduate Diploma in Educational Administration from the University of New South Wales and a Master of Philosophy from the University of Southern Queensland.

She moved to Queensland in 1977 to take up her appointment as Principal of Girls Grammar.

Mrs Hancock held this position for 24 years, retiring at the end of 2001 to start up an educational consultancy service for schools and colleges.

In 1985, she was made a Fellow of the Australian College of Education for her contribution to the education of girls. In 2000, the college awarded her the Queensland Chapter Medal in recognition of her contribution to education across all sectors.

The Minister of Education invited her in 1994 to become a Member of the Tertiary Entrance Procedures Authority. She remains Deputy Chair of that authority.

In 2001, Mrs Hancock was appointed to the Education Queensland Board of Governance chaired by the Director-General for Education.

The degree of Doctor of the University is an honorary award of the highest status in recognition of distinguished service to the community, to QUT or to scholarship.
