The concept of being able to use high-speed internet no matter where you are located around QUT's campuses is fast becoming a reality.

Free wireless access in the form of a new service called QUT Wireless has just been launched.

The service allows staff and students access to the university IT services including QUT Virtual, WebMail and Online Learning and Teaching, in a growing number of locations without the restraints of a network cable and a network port.

Denoted by the special signs, there are currently some 23 locations at Gardens Point, Kelvin Grove and Carseldine campuses where wireless access is available to QUT's network.

Information Technology Services, responsible for the project, is working to increase this coverage.

"Wireless communication is one of the most important issues in the development of new information technologies," Information Technology Services Director, Mr Neil Thelander said.

"Wireless technology uses short-range radio signals to connect computers to each other or the internet.

"Our QUT Wireless, is a flexible system that provides convenient options for people who want to use high-speed net on the move."

The wireless access service is intended to supplement the wired network at QUT and will provide connection speeds up to 256 KB per second.

Staff or students simply need their QUT-Access username and password and a laptop computer or a PDA with wireless network card.

Additionally laptops must have the QUT Secure Access Service software installed to access IT resources.

Wireless network cards are available for purchase from QUT Printing Services branches on all campuses.

Assistance for users is available from the ITS website at www.wireless.qut.edu.au which comes complete with details of the service, coverage maps, configuration guides for getting connected and other useful information.

Student Helpdesk provides support for student laptops and trouble shoots all connection isssues regardless of brand or type of hardware.
