David Jones CEO Erica Berchtold shared her approach to retail transformation, digital innovation and leading an iconic Australian brand through change at the QUT Business Leaders’ Forum in Brisbane.

In a conversation with broadcaster Ellen Fanning, Ms Berchtold explored the changing retail landscape and the need to balance customer expectations, digital innovation and commercial performance.

As the first female CEO in the 188-year history of David Jones, Ms Berchtold is leading the next phase of the retailer’s transformation, with a focus on accelerating growth, strengthening commercial performance, advancing digital capability and enhancing the customer experience across stores and online.

One of Australia’s most respected retail leaders, Ms Berchtold has built a career spanning more than two decades across some of the country’s most recognised consumer brands.

Before joining David Jones, she was CEO of THE ICONIC, where she led the business through significant digital growth and innovation. She has also held senior leadership roles in Harvey Norman, was Managing Director of Rebel Sport and CEO of Mosaic Brands, earning a reputation for transformation, innovation and customer-led strategy.

Professor Sharon Christensen, Executive Dean of the QUT Faculty of Business and Law, said Ms Berchtold’s experience offered valuable insights into the leadership required to guide organisations through significant change.

“Erica’s resilience and diversity of experience in retail has put her in an excellent position to see what we can do with the oldest department store as we move and transform it for the future,” Professor Christensen said.

The QUT Business Leaders’ Forum series invites prominent national and international leaders to share insights into their leadership journey and the trends shaping Australia’s economic and social landscape.
