QUT have announced a new program that is amplifying the voices of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people; the Meanjin Oration.

The Meanjin Oration invites leaders in their field to inspire, cultivate, and showcase research excellence by Indigenous people in Australia.

This year the Meanjin Orator will be one of Australia’s most respected Aboriginal academics and leaders, Distinguished Professor Marcia Langton AO presenting on the theme of Voice, Politics and Education.

Distinguished Professor Langton will be joined by Patricia Karvelas, a prominent and highly respected Australian journalist, television and radio host, podcaster, political journalist, and commentator.

QUT Vice Chancellor, Professor Margaret Sheil AO said that rather than a traditional lecture series, the Meanjin Oration aims to spark conversations about Indigenous perspectives and change behaviours.

‘These conversations have a ripple effect and will lead to real, meaningful change,’ Professor Sheil said.

‘The Meanjin Oration is another part of the QUT commitment to embedding and celebrating Indigenous perspectives.’

The Meanjin Oration series builds upon other successes in the Indigenous Strategy space at QUT including the recent launch of the Indigenous Research Strategy and the multi-award-winning Campus to Country strategy.

‘Often Indigenous education in this sector is student-focussed, but at QUT we add another layer by working from a systems-level approach and make sure that the university’s policies, procedures and practices consider Indigenous perspectives,’ Professor Sheil said.

‘This helps us meet the need of Indigenous Australian students, creates an academic career pathway and increases our Indigenous Australian research focus, as well as embedding Indigenous perspectives throughout our research and teaching. ‘

Registrations are now open for the 2022 Meanjin Oration.

The event will be held on July 11 at the QUT Gardens Point campus or online.
