School students in Year 12 in 2008 who are interested in pursuing a career in nursing will be able to start their studies at the Queensland University of Technology's Caboolture campus.

START QUT is an enhanced studies program that offers the university experience to Year 12 students by allowing them to complete a university subject during school semester.

Head of Caboolture campus Robert Craig said this year the Caboolture campus was offering START QUT units in business, education, creative industries and humanities and human services.

"From next year (2008), students will also be able to undertake a choice of nursing subjects including Communication for Nursing Practice and Diversity and Health: Introduction to Indigenous and Multicultural Perspectives," he said.

Mr Craig said the inclusion of nursing in the START QUT program was in part due to demand.

"Nursing is a popular course choice at QUT, particularly for school leavers," he said.

"The START QUT program is a good chance for school students to learn what it's like to study at uni.

"It offers a good preview of the nursing course and can help with the future transition from school to university."

Mr Craig said school students who successfully completed two university subjects had the opportunity to gain admission to a wide range of QUT courses after completing Year 12.

To take part in the programs students must be recommended by their school. For more information contact the QUT Caboolture campus on 07 5316 7494 or visit www.scholarships.qut.edu.au.
