Open Day is coming—you’ve checked the program and figured out which seminars you don’t want to miss. But what else is there? Here’s list of activities to check out if you’re considering studying a health degree.

Kelvin Grove campus

The new attraction this year—this is the first time Kelvin Grove has opened the full campus to Open Day visitors. Make time to take part in the following activities:

Biomedical sciences H2 laboratory Open House

Future biomedical science and medical laboratory science students can explore state-of-the-art equipment and facilities in the H2 laboratory. The 120-seat wet lab is open throughout the day and will showcase undergraduate lab activities in microbiology, immunology and introductory molecular biology units.

Top tip: closed shoes are required to enter the laboratories.

Nursing Clinical Simulation Open House

Explore our newly expanded nursing simulation facility, which replicates a real-life hospital environment, where students can practice their skills in realistic scenarios. The ward is equipped with electric beds, high-fidelity mannequins, advanced interactive technology and industry-standard medical equipment and simulators.

A teacher and three students stand next to a bed in a simulation laboratory that looks like a hospital ward.

Paramedic science simulation labs open house

Paramedic science students practice their skills inside life-sized ambulances using human patient simulators. Check out these simulation facilities and participate in hands-on activities like learning to perform CPR on a life-sized mannequin.

A lecturer is standing infront of a life-sized simulation ambulance sharing information with a crowd of people touring the simluation laboratory.

Podiatry demonstration tent

QUT podiatry students hone their skills using the latest 3D scanning and manufacturing technology. At the podiatry demonstration tent industry professionals will showcase a portable version of this innovative equipment. Explore the latest tech, chat with professional podiatrists, and find out about rewarding career pathways in podiatry.

A student and a lecturer sit at a desk in front of a cabinet housing a 3D printing machine. The student is holding the cast of a foot and the academic is pointing out a feature on the cast.

Queensland Reds tent

QUT sports and exercise science students have opportunities to experience working with the Queensland Reds as part of their course. At Open Day Queensland Reds players will be chatting to people outside of A Block. Meet the players and test your skills on the Passing Target.

QUT Health Clinics

Our health clinics offer quality health services to the community and clinical education to our students. Take a tour of our clinical exercise physiology, podiatry and optometry health clinics where students work with real patients under the supervision of professionals.

Sports and exercise science biomechanics and resistance labs

Take a tour of our biomechanics lab space which utilises an indoor sprint track, force plates and 3D motion video capture to allow for in-depth understanding of movement analysis of both athletes and clinical populations. The resistance lab is used to instruct students in the use of weight-based training exercises for athletic performance, injury rehabilitation and clinical patient therapy.

Gardens Point campus

A sunny day on campus, in the foreground people relax on bean bags in the background there are crowded tents.

In the heart of the Brisbane CBD you’ll find QUT’s Gardens Point campus. Here’s a list of Open Day activities to check out:

Biomedical sciences laboratory Open House

Explore experiments that biomedical science and medical laboratory science students perform as part of their studies.

A group of students in a laboratory, supervised by a QUT academic, use a pipette to pipe liquid from a beaker to a flask.

Look at parasite jars, bacterial plates, and check out gram stains (bacteria on a slide) under the microscope. You could try your hand at loading samples onto e-Gels or take part in a karyotype simulator activity—in the video below current medical laboratory science student Abena Botwewood describes the types of testing she does in class to give you an idea of what you'll see.

Chat with technical staff and academics as they take you through the hands-on activities and ask questions about our courses.

Top tip: closed shoes are required to enter the laboratories.

Biomedical science demonstration tent

Next to the Health tent at Gardens Point you’ll find a demonstration tent featuring biomedical science projects, demonstrations and resources. Pick up a copy of  the Biomedical Scientist Job Kit and the Careers with STEM: STEM-X guide and chat with academics to have your questions answered.

Medical imaging and radiation therapy tours of Q Block

From first semester, first year, medical imaging students learn in simulation labs. These lead-lined X-ray rooms look like real hospital and clinical facilities and students train on specialist equipment.

A female medical imaging student in scrubs stands in a hallway - next to hear is a treatment room with a bed.

Radiation therapy students learn in our Virtual Environment for Radiation Therapy (VERT). Using a combination of 3D technology, life-sized treatment equipment, and life-like patients students can see the results of radiation treatment plans they created.

Tours of these facilities are limited to 15 people per tour—get a sneak peek with our Virtual tours.

Pharmacy activities in Q Block

If you’re curious about the skills pharmacists use stop by Level 2 of Q Block to take part in pharmacy compounding activities. You could make your own cream, collect a lip balm kit, or visit the puzzle room. Numbers for activities are limited.

Top tip: closed shoes are required to enter the laboratories.
