QUT launches Spinout Guide
The QUT Spinout Guide was launched last night at the university’s quarterly Commercialisation Club event.
The Guide was launched by QUT Chief Commercialisation and Development Officer, Dr Erin Rayment.
Designed for QUT researchers, the Guide provides practical advice, knowledge and resources to help navigate the spinout journey. It brings together the commercial realities of creating a company, with the perspective of researchers wishing to see their knowledge deliver real-world benefit.
“Spinouts are one way for researchers to see their research create impact, through building a team, raising sufficient capital, and moving their idea down a product development pathway,” said Dr Rayment.
“At QUT, we’re seeing more ideas progress into spinouts across health, digital, and agriculture. These companies sit at the intersection of discovery and entrepreneurship.”
“But it’s not for everyone. A spinout is a serious commitment that has real trade-offs and constraints. Our job is to make sure researchers understand that upfront and have the right support if they choose to go down that path.”
The launch event also featured a panel chaired by QUT Pro Vice-Chancellor (Entrepreneurship and Regional Innovation) Professor Rowena Barrett, who interviewed practitioners with many years of spinout experience.
“QUT offers a strong and growing entrepreneurial ecosystem,” said Professor Barrett.
“This Spinout Guide makes it easier to choose this form to communicate and realise the value of our science. After all, engaging in a spinout is not a departure from academic practice—it is another way of fulfilling it.”
The Guide is available on the QUT Office of Industry Engagement SharePoint site, and is accessible by all QUT staff, students and visitors. People without QUT access can request a PDF copy of the Guide by emailing industry.engagement@qut.edu.au
The Guide has been developed by the QUT Office of Industry Engagement, with input from across the University and external stakeholders.
