Professor Michael Schuetz
Faculty of Health,
School of Medicine
Biography
Areas of expertise- Orthopedic trauma surgery
- Emergency care
- Accidents
- Medical Technology Innovation
- Medical & translational Research
As an executive leader, Professor Schuetz has a demonstrated record of building and sustaining high-performing research enterprises, attracting over AU$20 million in competitive national and international funding, and forging enduring strategic alliances with governments, universities, hospitals, and the global medical device industry — including DePuy Synthes (Johnson & Johnson), Stryker, KLS Martin, and OPED. He has governed investment portfolios, chaired multi-stakeholder technology transfer and incubator boards, and steered early-stage medical innovations through regulatory pathways (CE, FDA, 510(k)) to first-in-human evaluation and commercial exit — directly overseeing investments exceeding CHF 60 million across 20+ projects. His advisory roles have spanned the Australian Federal Department of Health and Ageing, the Protocol Advisory Sub-Committee, and the Specialist Orthopaedic Clinical Advisory Group, giving him first-hand command of the regulatory and health-technology assessment landscape.
Professor Schuetz has shaped trauma systems at a state, national, and international level. He was a founding architect of the 2006 Queensland Trauma Plan, the first Director of Trauma in Queensland, and the inaugural Chair of the Queensland Trauma Clinical Network. He subsequently led Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery at the Charite University Hospital in Berlin — one of Europe's largest university hospitals — as Chair and Director. His scholarly output spans 290+ peer-reviewed publications (h-index 55, 14,000+ citations), two major surgical textbooks, 13 book chapters, and three co-invented patents, one of which has achieved CE certification and entered clinical trial.
A gifted educator and globally connected faculty member active across more than 30 countries, Professor Schuetz has supervised 15+ PhD graduates and contributed to the education of surgeons at every career stage. He brings to senior leadership the rare combination of active surgical practice, executive credibility, deep scientific authority, and the cross-cultural intelligence of a career lived and led across continents.
