Dr Jake Bradford
Faculty of Science,
School of Computer Science
Biography
Dr Bradford is an emerging early-career academic in the School of Computer Science at Queensland University of Technology. He leads the bioinformatics stream of the Integrative Computational and Plant Genomics lab that spans into the School of Biology and Environment Science. His work is shaped by his background as an industrial software engineer and data scientist, alongside strong interests in high-performance computing (i.e., supercomputers and public cloud) and applied biotechnologies (e.g., CRISPR).
Through his doctoral and postdoctoral research, Dr Bradford contributed to improving understanding of coral genetics in collaboration with the Australian Institute of Marine Science and to the development of novel gene-targeting platforms with the University of Queensland. He is a key contributor to CRISPR–Cas9 guide RNA design methods that have enabled research across a wide range of species, including those with extremely large genomes.
His recent research focuses on making bioinformatics methods more accessible to researchers from diverse backgrounds and supporting deeper insight into plant biology. He also has interests in the human perception of sound, and is contributing to an effort to understand the experiences of cochlear implants.
Many of the technologies developed by Dr Bradford are released as open-source software, allowing others to freely use, adapt and build upon his work.
Dr Bradford teaches introductory computer science topics at the Masters level and advanced software engineering, including web, mobile and cloud application development, across undergraduate and postgraduate information technology degrees.
Dr Bradford is available to supervise research students. Please contact him via email with your academic and professional experience, and a letter explaining your motivations and areas of interest.
He coordinates the QUT School of Computer Science research seminar series. Should you be interested in talking in a seminar, please reach out to Dr Bradford.
