QUT is expecting to take student enrolments into its innovative five-year undergraduate Doctor of Medicine (MD) pathway in 2028 (subject to accreditation). It will be the most streamlined public pathway to a medical degree in Queensland, providing work-ready doctors and equipping aspiring medical professionals with real-world skills for contemporary medical practice.
QUT's School of Medicine has been established within the Faculty of Health, drawing on our existing expertise, knowledge, and capabilities. The school builds on QUT’s strong reputation for industry collaboration and innovation, with a focus on addressing critical challenges in the healthcare workforce.
Our vision
QUT is changing the world through education and research. Our vision is to develop a pipeline of socially aware, entrepreneurial, tech savvy, safe medical practitioners with excellent clinical acumen and real-world digital capabilities, ready and able to deliver personalised and team-based care in urban, regional and remote areas.
Our priorities reflect our vision as the university for the real world. Our key aims are to address the critical shortfall of medical practitioners, especially in urban fringe, regional, rural and remote areas of Australia, and to boost the number of Indigenous doctors.
Through partnerships with Queensland Health and other providers, our graduates will be placed where they are needed most—strengthening regional, rural, and outer metropolitan healthcare services. We will contribute to a more accessible, equitable and sustainable healthcare system that ensures that the highest quality medical care is available for all Queenslanders.
Our leadership
QUT's School of Medicine is led by Professor Jennifer Williams, a distinguished academic and clinical specialist. She is a current practicing senior staff specialist emergency physician with Queensland Health and an experienced leader in medical education and healthcare strategy, with a career spanning clinical practice, medical training, and academic leadership. Her expertise and commitment to strengthening the healthcare workforce will play a key role in shaping QUT’s medical school.
Study
QUT's Doctor of Medicine will equip aspiring medical professionals with the skills and experience they need to serve the communities that need them most. Through early clinical placements and strong partnerships, our students will gain frontline experience from the very start of their studies, ensuring they graduate ready to make a real impact on healthcare in Queensland.
Our program (subject to accreditation) will offer:
- a direct undergraduate entry pathway from high school, reducing training duration and financial barriers
- alternative entry pathways for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and rural and remote students
- early clinical placements, starting in Year 1, Semester 1
- flexible part-time study options to allow students to contribute to the workforce while completing their degree
- a graduate entry pathway for students with a recognised bachelor degree
- a curriculum designed to foster primary care commitment, producing graduates ready to serve local communities.
Making a real difference
'One of the biggest challenges for medicine is keeping up with a changing world. But, this is QUT's strength. It's not only a university that grows with the world, but leads some of that change.
QUT can contribute a workforce that reflects humanity, which can restore the trust between the doctor and patient. QUT will train future-focused doctors who can be at the cutting edge of medicine.'

'As a medical engineering student at QUT I felt fortunate to experience a supportive and grounded culture. It was refreshing to be part of an institution that focuses on students truly learning and developing professional connections, rather than just ''getting through'' assessments.
I'm confident that QUT will bring this same ethos to its new medical school, to provide strong, student-centred learning for our future medical professionals.'
