Queensland University of Technology has attracted a $75 million infrastructure commitment by the Federal Government in this week's federal budget toward QUT's new $200 million science and technology precinct and community hub.
The funding pledge represents Queensland's highest and the nation's second highest injection in tertiary education and innovation infrastructure in this round.
QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake praised the budget and the Government's significant allocation for research and infrastructure in the higher education sector.
He said the funding would help build an internationally significant centre for the development of science, technology, engineering and mathematics disciplines at the university's Gardens Point campus in Brisbane's CBD.
"With a theme of sustainable and secure infrastructure, the precinct will focus on research and teaching and learning in the key priority areas of climate change; infrastructure; and food, water and energy security," Professor Coaldrake said.
"The project will place QUT at the forefront of development of a world leading model in the teaching and research of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, while exciting new facilities will ensure the reinvigoration of the community life of the Gardens Point campus."
Construction of QUT's ambitious development is already underway with demolition of five buildings and a multi-million dollar upgrade of laboratories commenced.
The precinct is due to be completed by 2012.
