Why are you studying computer software and systems?

I chose the Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) in Computer and Software Systems for two main reasons. Firstly, I've always been passionate about technology and computers. From a young age, I found myself tinkering with gadgets and exploring programming languages, which sparked my interest in the field. I saw the potential for technology to solve real-world problems and improve people's lives and entertainment, and I wanted to be a part of that.

Secondly, after researching various engineering disciplines, I found that computer and software systems engineering aligned with my interests and career goals. This course provided a strong foundation in both hardware and software aspects of computing, which I believed would be very helpful to my future development.

Why did you choose to study at QUT?

I chose QUT for its practical approach to engineering education, emphasising hands-on learning and real-world application, which I believe are crucial for engineers. QUT's strong industry connections offered networking opportunities and real-world experience during my studies, which enhanced my understanding of industry and my career prospects. I also chose QUT for its esteemed reputation in engineering and state-of-the-art facilities.

What is your favourite part of your course?

I thoroughly enjoy my course, making it challenging to pick favourites. One standout feature was the interconnectedness of the different units. I often found that knowledge from one unit complemented another, enhancing my overall understanding and memory retention.

Project-based units were another highlight. They not only provided invaluable teamwork experience but also allowed me to see a project through from inception to completion, which was incredibly rewarding. I'm currently engaged in my thesis, and this experience of working closely with a supervisor through regular meetings and project development, has been both enriching and beneficial to my growth.

The facilities and labs were also impressive. Everything, from computers to testing stations, was readily available and well-maintained, making it easy for students to access and utilise these resources effectively.

How has your QUT studies prepared you for the real world?

I think the 'real world' was about transitioning from theoretical learning to practical application. I gained hands-on experience, worked on industry-relevant projects, undertook internships, honed problem-solving skills, and integrated knowledge from various subjects to address real-world challenges. This practical exposure prepared me for the complexities of the professional world and ensured that I could apply my education effectively in real-life scenarios as a computer and software systems engineer.

Throughout my studies, I've been pleasantly surprised by how well the coursework prepared me for engaging with industry experts. When networking with professionals from various companies, I was excited to find that I could not only understand the conversations but also contribute by bringing up points I had learned that were directly related to their expertise. This connection between classroom learning and real-world application is incredibly valuable and has given me confidence in my ability to apply what I've learned in meaningful ways in the professional world.

What support have you received from QUT?

I found career support services to be the most impactful among QUT's range of support services. I participated in networking and connect sessions organised by QUT's career support services. They were incredibly valuable as these events provided opportunities to interact with professionals from various companies and industries. I was able to establish connections and gain insights into the professional world. This helped me broaden my understanding of potential career paths and identify companies aligned with my career goals. It also encouraged me to engage in meaningful conversations with experts in my field.

I also attended a QUT workshop focused on LinkedIn and workplace-finding resources. This was a game-changer for me as I learned how to optimise my LinkedIn profile, which is essential for building a professional online presence. Additionally, I gained insights into effective job searching strategies and the use of workplace finding resources.

I received a scholarship for my studies in the Diploma in Engineering. I also received two Vacation Research Experience Scheme (VRES) scholarships. These allowed me to concentrate on my studies and research, contributing to my overall academic success.

Can you tell us about life on campus and living in Brisbane?

I primarily met people and made friends on campus through my classes. Interacting with classmates during lectures, group projects, and study sessions provided opportunities to connect with fellow students who shared similar academic interests. I joined the QUT Reality Lab, and I found it to be a rewarding experience. This club allowed me to connect with peers who shared a similar interest in emerging technologies. It provided opportunities to explore cutting-edge technology and stay up-to-date with the latest developments in the field.

I chose to study in Brisbane for several reasons, and one of the standout factors was the city's climate. Brisbane's favourable weather was a significant draw for me. This pleasant climate made it an appealing place to live and study, offering a comfortable environment for both outdoor and indoor activities. One of the best aspects of Brisbane that I enjoyed was the proximity of the Botanic Gardens to the QUT campus. It provided a perfect escape from the demands of academic life, allowing me to relax and rejuvenate amidst the greenery.

Anything else you’d like to add?

I highly recommend QUT to others for several reasons. Firstly, the university's emphasis on practical courses ensures that students not only acquire theoretical knowledge but also gain hands-on experience that is directly applicable in their chosen fields. This is very important to an engineering student. Secondly, QUT's strong connections with industry and career support services provide valuable networking opportunities and help students kickstart their careers. Lastly, QUT's state-of-the-art facilities and resources, combined with its commitment to staying at the forefront of technological advancements, ensure that students receive a top-notch education.
