Hi, my name is Devansh and I’m from India. I came to QUT to study a Master of Information Technology (Cyber and Security Networks). I love the academic structure, practical exposure and diversity of QUT. It gives me freedom to do things independently and think out of the box as I’m not limited to only the curriculum. The location of the campus is just perfect! You get to enjoy a proper student life and have a great time exploring this beautiful city.
My study highlights
I genuinely enjoyed almost every single class! One project that stands out is from my Advanced Networks course, where I built a gas analyser from scratch with the guidance of my amazing tutor. The feeling of completing something like that and learning so much along the way was truly satisfying. All the lecturers are very helpful and professional, teaching from their own experience.
The best part was that you could achieve so much and be involved in everything without ever feeling left out. All the co-curricular activities and the little events QUT used to organise played a huge role in making my time there so special.
Studying in Brisbane
I love the fact that Brisbane is a developed CBD but with peaceful and beautiful places to enjoy. It’s also close to mountains, rivers and wonderful scenery surrounding the city.
I use public transportation daily such as the ferry and bus. I found the public transportation network very good with clean and fast transport.
Adjusting to a new life overseas
It was difficult at the start moving to a new country with many changes to adapt to such as a new culture and lifestyle. I found other students and peers were very supportive in helping me adjust, and HiQ and Student Support services were of great assistance when I needed it. Networking events and workshops benefited me a lot, as meeting new people gave me a good insight into different personalities and allowed me to understand the culture better.
Student life
I was a member of the MateQUT Cyber Security club for a few months where networking and sharing knowledge with each other played a big part. We had a great time doing CTF (Capture the flag) competitions, which is a fun competitive practical exercise refining your skills in the cybersecurity domain. I was also part of the Hindu Students Australia - QUT club, where we worked on empowering students' mental well-being and helping them with all sorts of queries, both personal and professional.
Graduate into the real world
At QUT I made full use of their wonderful workshops such as resume writing and building job-finding skills. They were very helpful and helped me a lot. The university schedule gives you enough free time to manage other things. During my studies, my first part-time job was with a well-known finance and mortgage firm, FPW Group, as a Database Marketing Analyst.
With support from QUT, I also landed an internship as a Network Design Intern at Woodordia IND. Additionally, I did another internship at an environment-focused company called Thomson Environmental Systems. I performed very well and was offered a full-time role as a Technical Data Engineer upon graduation. In this role I played an important role as a data engineer to oversee the company's existing and legacy data, which involved backups, management, report writing, SOPs document creation and raising/solving tickets related to technical faults.
Building on this experience, I can see myself growing into a senior role in cybersecurity. My dream job is to become either a Cyber Security Consultant or a Specialist in that field.
My advice
My one piece of advice would be: please do your research properly. Make sure you're clear on what you want to achieve, because QUT gives you great flexibility to find your right path. Always keep this mindset: just start. Even if you don't know how to do something yet, begin the process. The results will follow, you'll see.
The biggest thing that I learned as soon as I stepped into the real world is people skills. You need to have great people skills to excel in any of your jobs, as your technical expertise helps 20% whilst the remaining 80% is all about people, both internal and external.
Finally, I would just like to say that real growth happens only when you are open to new opportunities and you never stop achieving. Your path might look different right now, but you will reach your goal. Every little thing you try and achieve will fuel your journey later. Just keep working hard and smart! Stay positive, and always, always try to give back to the community and help others in need, just like how you gained from people and places. All the best!
