As a child, I was always taking apart my remote-controlled toys to understand how they worked. That curiosity never faded, I’ve always been fascinated by how technology works and how it can be improved. It was this passion for understanding and solving problems that drew me to engineering, particularly computer and software systems with a minor in robotics. I knew it would give me the knowledge and practical skills to explore emerging technologies, create innovative solutions, and contribute to developing the technology of tomorrow.
My QUT study journey
I chose to study at QUT because of its reputation for practical, industry-focused learning. I wanted more than just classroom knowledge. I was looking for a university where I could apply what I learned through real-world projects and develop skills that employers value. QUT's engineering program, along with the opportunity to specialise in computer and software systems while exploring robotics, aligned perfectly with my interests and career goals. Studying in Brisbane also appealed to me because of its welcoming, multicultural community, making it an ideal place to grow both academically and personally as an international student.
From theory to practice
One of my favourite aspects of studying engineering at QUT has been the hands-on learning approach. Practical classes and project-based assessments help bring theory to life and develop real-world problem-solving skills. I also value the flexible timetable, which allows me to balance my studies with extracurricular and leadership opportunities. Industry events have provided valuable insights into engineering careers, making my experience both rewarding and career focused.
I’ve gained valuable practical experience through project-based learning and extracurricular activities at QUT. Key projects, including developing an airport management system and programming a microcontroller, strengthened my skills in system design, software development, and problem-solving. Through hackathons and my role as a Projects Officer in the QUT AI & Machine Learning Society where I help students with machine learning and build projects, I’ve also developed strong teamwork, communication, leadership, and mentoring skills while applying my knowledge in real-world settings.
Student life
I made friends at QUT by joining student clubs, participating in volunteering opportunities through the Connect Program, and attending campus social events. Being involved in these activities helped me connect with students from different courses and backgrounds in a more relaxed and social environment. Regularly attending classes has also played a key role in building connections, as it allowed me to interact with classmates, work together on group activities, and naturally develop friendships over time.
I’ve been actively involved in several QUT extracurricular programs. I’m a member of the College of Excellence and Faculty of Engineering Real Leaders Program, which have strengthened my leadership skill and expanded my network. In addition, I work as an International Officer with the QUT Guild, supporting the international student community. These experiences have helped me grow both personally and professionally while building strong connections at QUT.
Living in Brisbane
I chose to study in Brisbane because it offers a great balance between high-quality education and a relaxed, student-friendly lifestyle. The city is also very welcoming and multicultural, which made it an ideal environment for me as an international student.
One of my favourite places is South Bank. It offers a variety of restaurants and a lively atmosphere. I also like walking along the Brisbane River, as it provides a peaceful break from studies helping me relax and reset. The City Botanic Gardens is also a wonderful place for quiet study breaks or walks, and Kangaroo Point, which offer beautiful river views.
