Why I choose QUT
I was drawn to QUT because of its focus on real-world learning and hands-on design projects. I wanted to study in an environment where I could actually create things not just study theory. The university gives you the freedom to explore your ideas while helping you develop real-world skills. The facilities, supportive staff, and focus on practical design make it a great place to grow as a designer. Studying at QUT has helped me discover my creative voice and gain confidence in what I can do. I’ve learned so much about design, collaboration, and problem-solving things that go far beyond the classroom. It’s been a journey that’s shaped both my skills and who I am as a designer.
Finding your creative voice
I was surprised by how open and supportive the design community at QUT is. You’re encouraged to explore your own creative voice while still learning solid design principles. There’s so much freedom to experiment with ideas and you end up discovering new skills you didn’t even know you had.
Real-world experience
I’ve completed a portfolio unit and projects that simulated real client work, which helped me understand how design operates in professional contexts from research and ideation to presentation. To me, “real world” means learning by testing, failing, and improving. Every unit felt connected to how design works in the industry. We designed for real audiences, used professional tools, and learned to present our work like we would to clients or companies
My favourite part has been working on physical prototypes and interactive installations that combine art and technology like my Mood Orbs project. I also loved using the QUT DigiFab Lab and working with amazing lecturers who genuinely support your creative process and push you to experiment. These opportunities gave me valuable experience in showcasing my design process and outcomes. I’ll also be starting an internship soon, which I’m really excited about as it's another opportunity to apply what I’ve learned in a real-world setting.
Scholarship support
I received the QUT Equity Scholarship, which provided a fair amount of financial support during one period of my studies. Even though it was a one-time help, it came at the right time and really supported me with some study expenses when I needed it most.
Being a student in Brisbane
I chose to study in Brisbane because it’s a calm, welcoming city with a great balance between nature and urban life. The weather is beautiful, and there’s always something happening around South Bank or the city. I love going for walks by the river or spending time at the beach when I get a break from study.
