I chose to study in Brisbane because it offered the perfect combination of academic opportunity and lifestyle. One of my dreams has always been to visit the Gold Coast, with its beautiful sunny beaches, and studying at QUT made that possible.
The Master of Sustainable Infrastructure has a specialised major in Urban Water Management Systems, and Wastewater treatment, a rapidly emerging field within modern water technology that aligns with current industry needs and future innovation. In many Pacific Island countries, including Vanuatu, wastewater management remains a significant challenge due to limited infrastructure and increasing urban development. I wanted to better understand how modern wastewater treatment systems work so I can contribute to developing practical and sustainable solutions for my country. Learning about wastewater treatment has shown me how engineering can directly improve community health, protect our marine environments, and support sustainable economic growth.
My study experience at QUT
Throughout my Master of Engineering at QUT, I particularly enjoyed studying water engineering, sustainable infrastructure, hydrology, artificial intelligence in water engineering, and wastewater treatment. These subjects challenged me to think critically about how engineering can solve real-world problems while protecting our environment. I especially enjoyed learning how innovative technologies, data analysis, and sustainable design can improve infrastructure resilience, water security, and public health. The practical projects allowed me to apply theory to realistic engineering scenarios, which has been invaluable for my professional development.
My studies have strengthened my understanding of sustainable infrastructure, climate resilience, water resource management, and innovative construction materials. These are all critical areas for small island developing states like Vanuatu, where infrastructure must withstand cyclones, earthquakes, coastal erosion, and the increasing impacts of climate change.
Ultimately, I want to help build infrastructure that improves the quality of life for our people while supporting Vanuatu’s long-term sustainable development goals.
Learning through real-world experience
To me, the ‘real world’ means learning through practical, hands-on experiences that prepare you to apply knowledge confidently beyond the university environment. Studying a Master of Engineering reinforced this idea, as the course emphasised solving real industry problems, using current engineering tools, and developing the mindset needed to transition smoothly into professional practice.
It also made me realise that, in the context of climate change, engineers are not just learners. We are future problem solvers. The real world requires us to act on what we have learned, because if we do not apply our skills to address today’s environmental challenges, no one else will do it for us. This sense of responsibility is what made the course feel truly connected to real world impact.
Problem solving and creativity
One thing that pleasantly surprised me about this course was the strong integration of AI and machine learning tools across our learning activities. I didn’t expect to use these technologies so extensively, but they have become powerful extensions of our creativity and problem solving. The course showed me how AI can take an idea, a design, or even a complex engineering concept and help transform it into something tangible within minutes or even seconds.
When used correctly, these tools don’t replace learning, they elevate it. They push your imagination further, help you test ideas faster, and give you a real sense of what modern engineering practice looks like. For prospective students, this is a huge advantage because it prepares you for the future of the industry, not just the present.
Applying my skills in the real world
Returning to Vanuatu marks an exciting new chapter in my career. While I remain committed to supporting my country, my role is evolving beyond my previous government responsibilities. I am now focusing on applying the advanced knowledge and experience I gained at QUT through engineering consultancy, sustainable infrastructure development, and innovative construction solutions. I will continue collaborating closely with government departments, development partners, and the private sector to help deliver projects that strengthen climate resilience and improve infrastructure across Vanuatu. My goal is to contribute wherever I can make the greatest positive impact on our communities whilst supporting Vanuatu’s long-term sustainable development goals.
Growing as a leader
In five years, I see myself serving as a leader in sustainable infrastructure development in Vanuatu and the Pacific region. I hope to continue working closely with government agencies, international development partners, and the private sector to deliver resilient infrastructure projects that benefit local communities. I also aim to further grow my engineering consultancy and business initiatives that focus on innovative, low-carbon construction materials and climate-resilient infrastructure. Most importantly, I want to mentor young engineers and contribute to building local engineering capacity for the future.
