I commenced my university studies in early 2023, undertaking a four-year Bachelor of Business (International) with a strong interest in human resources management. However, as I progressed academically and observed the growing impact of artificial intelligence on organisations' productivity and efficiency, I realigned my academic trajectory in semester 2 of 2023 to build capabilities across both business and data domains, pursuing a dual degree in a Bachelor of Data Science and a Bachelor of Business (Human Resource Management).
At the time, I identified this intersection as a strategic, forward-looking pathway, particularly in human resource management, where data-driven technologies can enhance decision-making, organisational effectiveness, and the employee experience. Alongside my academic work, I have always loved discussing and deepening my understanding of human behaviour. I regularly reflect on the underlying drivers of people’s actions and decisions, drawing insights from interactions with family, peers, and broader social contexts. So, the ongoing process of observation and reflection has reinforced my commitment to specialising in human resource management, as I firmly believe that people are the central force behind organisational adaptability, innovation, and long-term growth.
Choosing my study path
Choosing to study data science alongside business was a challenging decision, as complex mathematics and analytics had neither been my strongest discipline nor an area in which I felt intellectually confident my entire life. However, with the support and encouragement of my family, I began to build the determination to work hard and start learning early, confident that these skills would allow me to adapt to the future workforce and strengthen my resilience as a young leader. I believe this journey is an opportunity to build technical expertise and develop the mindset and adaptability essential for meaningful impact, serving as a solid stepping stone for my career development.
Reflecting on my decision, I am genuinely grateful for the path I have chosen. The skills I am developing, including analytical thinking, technological literacy, and leadership capability, are recognised as core skills for 2030 in the World Economic Forum’s The Future of Jobs Report 2025. Positioned at the intersection of STEM and business, I aim to contribute to organisations where technology is designed around people. Despite rapid advances in artificial intelligence, human adaptability, empathy, and creativity remain my essential drivers of sustainable growth and innovation.
What I love about my studies
My favourite aspects of my studies have been the units that combine strong theoretical foundations with practical application. I have particularly valued access to learning facilities and digital platforms that support collaboration, independent study, and experimentation. Through extensive project-based assessments and my involvement in student organisations, I have gained substantial practical experience in problem scoping, data analysis, stakeholder communication, and the delivery of structured outcomes that closely reflect professional environments. I have also regularly sought guidance and feedback from mentors and academic staff to refine my approach and strengthen the quality of my work.
I strongly believe that the greatest benefit of these experiences has been the opportunity to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings while developing professional judgement, adaptability, and confidence in addressing real-world challenges. In Semester 1 this year, I have completed my Business Capstone project, which provided valuable hands-on experience, and I am now preparing to undertake my Data Science Capstone for Semester 2. I look forward to further strengthening my skills through this comprehensive, industry-relevant project before graduating.
What real-world learning means to me
To me, the “real world” means moving beyond ideal scenarios and learning to work with complexity, uncertainty, and real constraints. It involves applying knowledge in situations where problems are not clearly defined, data may be imperfect, and decisions must balance technical analysis with human and organisational considerations. What made my course “real world” was its strong emphasis on practical, project-based learning and industry-relevant thinking. Through applied assessments, collaborative work, and hands-on projects, I was encouraged to translate theory into action, communicate ideas clearly, and adapt to real challenges. I particularly value this approach, as combining theoretical foundations with practical application enables me to retain knowledge more effectively, deepen my understanding, and cultivate a sustained enthusiasm for learning. With all those experiences, I have developed greater confidence, professional judgement, and the ability to remain adaptable in dynamic, real-world environments.
I was also pleasantly surprised by the consistency with which my course reinforced real-world thinking, encouraging critical reflection beyond theoretical concepts. Based on my experience, I encourage new students to actively engage in projects, seek feedback, and embrace challenges early in their studies. I highly recommend QUT for its industry-relevant learning, supportive academic environment, and scholarship opportunities that make higher education more accessible.
Moreover, during my final year of high school, I had the opportunity to visit QUT and participate in student club activities, which gave me a genuine sense of belonging even before enrolling and strengthened my belief that I could thrive in this environment. The university’s slogan, “QUT the university for the real world,” deeply resonated with my values and reinforced my decision to pursue a hands-on, relevant education at QUT.
Scholarship support
Alongside QUT’s practical, industry-focused business programs, which strongly align with my preference for hands-on and applied learning, the International Merit Scholarship was one of the main factors influencing my decision to study at QUT. The scholarship provided a 25% reduction in my tuition fees, making my education more accessible and easing the financial burden on my family. This support also helped make it possible for my younger brother to study at QUT, giving both of us valuable opportunities to pursue our academic goals and reach our full potential.
Social life
I enjoy connecting with others and engaging in meaningful conversations, and I have built friendships across campus through student clubs, group projects, university activities, and networking events. Participating in student organisations has connected me with people who share similar interests and goals. In these environments, I have learned a great deal through collaboration, shared experiences, and working together to overcome challenges. What I enjoy most about QUT’s social life is the friendly and welcoming atmosphere. Students are open to casual conversations, proactive in meeting new people, and willing to build connections across different cultures and areas of study.
Over more than three years at QUT, I have been actively involved in 180 Degrees Consulting QUT and VietQ. Through 180 Degrees Consulting, I worked on consulting projects with real organisations, collaborating with diverse teams to analyse problems, develop structured recommendations, and deliver practical solutions. These experiences enabled me to apply my academic knowledge in a professional context while strengthening my leadership, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Through VietQ, I became part of a close-knit community that celebrates Vietnamese culture and supports student connection. I have also enjoyed attending events hosted by other QUT clubs, including BANDS, BAMSA, Women in Business, and Women in Tech. These experiences have helped me form meaningful friendships, strengthen my teamwork and leadership abilities, and develop a strong sense of belonging within the QUT community.
Living in Brisbane
I am an international student who has lived in Brisbane for nearly nine years. My parents initially chose Brisbane as my study destination because of its safety, welcoming atmosphere, strong student support systems, and high quality of life. Compared with larger cities, Brisbane feels more relaxed and less pressured, which helped me settle in quickly, embrace life abroad, and focus on my studies. Over time, I have grown to truly appreciate being part of this city, and Brisbane has naturally become my second home. I also love Brisbane’s climate. Brisbane's warm, humid subtropical weather is quite similar to the tropical monsoon climate of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, making it easy for me to adapt and feel comfortable here. After nearly nine years, I can wholeheartedly say that Brisbane holds a very special place in my heart.
What I enjoy most about Brisbane is its easy-going lifestyle, friendly community, and everyday convenience. One of my favourite things to do is take the CityCat along the river, especially in the evenings. There is something uniquely calming about feeling the cool river breeze, watching the city lights, and listening to the ferry glide smoothly across the water.
My favourite Brisbane spots
Brisbane is full of places that I love spending time in. New Farm Park is at the top of my list, particularly during Jacaranda season. I often meet friends there for free early-morning Pilates sessions or relaxed coffee catchups. South Bank is another favourite if mine, with its beautiful riverside walkways, lively cultural spaces, and scenic cycling paths along Kingsford Smith Drive. I also enjoy spending time at the QUT Gardens Point campus, which is surrounded by lush greenery and stunning views. On weekends, I love visiting local farmers’ markets such as West End, Kelvin Grove Village, and Milton, where I can explore diverse food options and soak up the vibrant community atmosphere. The Suitcase Rummage Market also holds a special place in my heart. I have been selling my old clothes and many other items there once a year since high school, and it has become a self-made tradition I truly love.
