Hi, I’m Mohanna from Iran. When I first chose to study a Bachelor of Biomedical Science, it was because I had dreams of pursuing medicine. I began my studies at Taylor’s University in Malaysia, where I completed my first year. During that time, I started to realise that I wanted more than just a direct path to medical school. I was seeking an environment that would enable me to grow both academically and personally. I needed a place where I could explore my interests and discover new ones. That led me to transfer to QUT, and looking back, it was one of the best decisions I have ever made. QUT offered me more than just a degree. It offered me clarity, direction, and opportunities I didn’t even know I was searching for. The learning environment here is focused on real-world application and innovation. Practical experience, lab work, and exposure to research are not just part of the course. They are the heart of it.

Why I chose biomedical science at QUT

Biomedical Science is not a one-way street. People often think this degree only leads to med school or academic research, but that could not be further from the truth. This course opens doors to so many possibilities. From careers in diagnostics and biotechnology to roles in public health, pharmaceuticals and even science communication, the options are endless. What you learn in biomedical science changes the way you think, the way you solve problems and the way you approach life. It teaches you to be analytical, curious, and adaptable. These are skills that matter in any field.

One of the most powerful aspects of QUT’s program is the ability to choose a major and a minor. That freedom allowed me to focus on what I genuinely love. I shaped my studies around my interests and career goals rather than following a fixed path. This kind of flexibility is rare, and it has made a big difference in how engaged and motivated I feel about my learning.

Discovering my passion for research

One of the most eye-opening discoveries I made was just how much I enjoy research. I had originally assumed I would follow the medical route, but after spending time in the lab, I began to see the value and excitement of scientific exploration. It helped me realise that research is not only about experiments. It is about problem-solving, creativity and being part of something that can make a real difference in the world.

My project focused on peptide-based therapeutics, and I had the chance to attend talks by Honours and PhD students. Listening to them share their stories and explain how they chose their research topics was deeply inspiring. It made me realise that everyone’s path into science is different and that passion is what brings it all together.

Applying my skills in the real world

A turning point in my journey was the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) program. I completed my WIL placement at the Translational Research Institute (TRI), where I worked with an incredible research group. At the time, I was still unsure if research was the right path for me, but that internship changed everything. I had the opportunity to explore research from the inside, thanks to my supportive supervisor, who was also one of my lecturers. She guided me through various aspects of the research process and helped me see where I could fit into that world.

Welcoming student community

As an international student, I was also looking for a strong sense of community. At QUT, I found one that is welcoming, collaborative, and inspiring. The Bachelor of Biomedical Science course felt professional from the very beginning. We worked in teams, participated in research projects, attended seminars, and had the chance to connect with academics who were genuinely passionate about helping students grow. Studying biomedical science here doesn’t feel like reading from a textbook. It feels like being part of something real.

Making friends at QUT has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience. People are friendly and open, and group-based lab work creates natural opportunities to connect. I’ve met so many incredible students who are passionate, hardworking and supportive. Being part of this community made my transition from Malaysia to Australia feel smooth and meaningful.

Living in Brisbane

Living in Brisbane has been a joy. The warm weather was definitely a deciding factor for me. I prefer sunny climates, and Brisbane’s lifestyle fits me perfectly. I live in the CBD, which makes everything accessible. Most of my classes are at the Gardens Point campus, but I also love visiting Kelvin Grove for a change of scenery. The free shuttle between campuses makes exploring easy and fun.

Important learnings

At QUT, I discovered that success is not only about perfect grades. Of course, academic performance matters, but what truly stands out is how you think. Being creative, thinking critically and bringing a fresh perspective to a problem can be just as valuable as any score. That mindset has helped me grow more confident in my ideas and more open to new ways of learning.

Shaping my future

I often find myself recommending QUT to my friends, and a couple of them are now studying here too. It is a place where professionalism and friendliness exist side by side. A place where international students feel seen, supported and empowered.

QUT helped me turn uncertainty into purpose. I arrived thinking I was on a path to medicine. I stayed because I found my passion in research and realised that Biomedical Science could lead to so much more. It is not just a degree. It is a journey that shapes your mind, your goals and your future in ways you never expected.
