I have wanted to study abroad for a while now and was delighted when I found out about Aston University's partnership with QUT. I was able to take the plunge and extend my learning experience in another country. Moving to a new place can be quite daunting but I was able to access assistance from the QUT Support Service. This service helped me with various resources necessary to make the transition smoother. Additionally, the QUT Accommodation Service was helpful in my search for local student accommodation. A top tip for students interested in studying abroad is to try booking your accommodation where other students from your home university have booked theirs. Doing so could ensure that you have some familiar faces around in your new home.

University life

I attended Welcome week both semesters and it was so much fun and a great way to get into campus life. I enjoyed the many events, music performances, food stalls and useful information which was so good to get when you start university. I also joined in a welcome session specifically targeted towards exchange students arriving in Australia for the first time which was very helpful.   QUT has numerous of social clubs such as the Business Advantage and networking-based clubs but also the Surf club which I joined. This was a great way of meeting new friends and try out some new activities.

The highlights

The best part of doing an exchange is going to places incredibly different from what you might be used to. Some of the most fun I had whilst in Australia was hopping on a train up or down the coast to explore various beaches and towns. I also spent a lot of time in Brisbane City enjoying what it had to offer, such as the entertainment precinct in the Fortitude Valley. I would recommend travelling as much as possible whilst you are here since there is so much to see and do.

The thing I enjoyed the best living in Brisbane was the geography and biodiversity of the city. From the bats soaring at night to the winding river running right through the city, it made for an extraordinary experience unlike any other.

My advice

My advice to prospective exchange students would be to try as many of the activities and opportunities you come across, as they may be some of the best experiences you ever have. Additionally, being busy leaves less time for the homesickness that may sneak up on you!
