It may be a cliché, but I have always envisioned a career dedicated to driving positive change. After six years in communications, I chose to expand my path by pursuing social work—aligning my professional journey with my core values of equality, justice, and meaningful impact. Embracing this shift has been one of the most fulfilling decisions I’ve made.

A career pivot

When I decided to make this career change, it was important for me to become a critical social worker. QUT is one of the few universities in Australia that adopted a critical social work approach. Its focus on analysing power structures, challenging injustice, and promoting social change sets its program apart from other universities.  However, what truly sets this experience apart is the faculty. Their passion extends beyond the curriculum, fostering an environment of critical thinking, open dialogue, and continuous discovery. Their insights consistently push me to question, reflect, and engage with the world more profoundly.

Advocating for the voiceless

Over two years at QUT, I completed two social work placements that provided invaluable hands-on experience in diverse settings, one being in the disability sector and the other in domestic violence. These experiences helped deepen my understanding of support systems, social justice, and the role of advocacy in driving meaningful change. Each placement challenged me to think critically, adapt to complex environments, and apply theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts.

Building on these experiences, I quickly realised that the ‘real world’ extends beyond theory; it is about translating knowledge into action that creates tangible impact. Fieldwork has been essential in refining my skills, broadening my perspective, and preparing me to navigate the complexities of this ever-evolving field in ways that traditional learning alone could never achieve.

A shared passion for making a positive impact

One of the most unexpected aspects of this journey was the opportunity to learn from such a diverse group of peers. Our cohort represented a wide range of cultures, beliefs, and life experiences, creating an environment rich in perspective and insight. Despite our different backgrounds, we are united by a common purpose - a deep commitment to making a meaningful impact. For prospective students, this diversity is not just something to appreciate; it’s an integral part of the learning experience, shaping the way we approach social work and the world around us.Ola learning in a QUT classroom

I’m a certified city girl so I love the energy of big cities, but I also appreciate a more laid-back atmosphere. Brisbane offers the best of both worlds, reminding me of my hometown, Abu Dhabi. It’s more than just a place to study; it’s a vibrant, welcoming city that quickly felt like home.

Since graduating

Since graduating, I’ve been working in domestic  violence, particularly within culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) communities. This work has allowed me to apply my skills and continue advocating for those affected by complex issues. I’m also looking to expand my focus within the refugee space, with aspirations of ultimately working with the UNHCR to make a broader, global impact!

I highly recommend QUT. Its commitment to academic excellence and practical education, create a dynamic learning environment. With a diverse and inclusive community and a supportive faculty, QUT offers a fulfilling educational experience.
