Investigating Cognition in People with Diabetes-Related Foot Ulcers

Citation

This research investigated how cognition may be affected in people with type 2 diabetes who have diabetes-related foot ulcers, compared with those at risk but without ulcers. A case–control study demonstrated that participants with diabetes-related foot ulcers had significantly greater cognitive impairment, even after adjusting for other potential confounding factors. A smaller pilot study, conducted over 12 weeks, suggested that cognition may improve when foot ulcers heal. Findings highlight the importance of routine cognitive screening in caring for people who have diabetes-related foot ulcers to support early detection and management that could improve healing and increase quality of life.

The Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic overwhelmed health systems globally. In Indonesia, a substantial portion of healthcare resources were redirected to manage COVID-19, yet, Indonesia has a high proportion of people with diabetes who still required adequate health services to achieve health goals. Using qualitative methods involving people with diabetes and health professionals, this study demonstrates that considerations of the broader context of diabetes management across outpatient department, community and family setting are essential to improve diabetes management outcomes during the pandemic. These findings will contribute to further improvement of diabetes management during future crisis situations in Indonesia.

The Effectiveness of a Nurse-led Health Education Program for Parents of Children Undergoing Congenital Heart Disease Surgery in Vietnam

Citation

In Vietnam, parents of children having congenital heart surgery often lack sufficient health education, placing their children at higher risk of severe complications and poor recovery. This study implemented and evaluated a nurse-led health education program, which improved parental knowledge and helped achieve greater child health outcomes, including healthier weight gain and better blood oxygen levels. The program shows promise for replication in resource-constrained settings to enhance affected children’s health.
