Developing a National Cybersecurity Threat Information Sharing Framework
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Leonie Simpson (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Hasmukh Morarji (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis aimed to develop a comprehensive framework for establishing effective national-level cyber threat information-sharing programs, with a particular focus on their relevance in diverse national contexts. While several developed nations have implemented such frameworks, their direct applicability to developing countries remains uncertain. To address this gap, the research employed a comparative case study approach involving surveys of cybersecurity professionals in Saudi Arabia and Australia. The findings identified critical success factors shaping the effectiveness of information sharing at the national level, leading to the development of tailored models for each case study country.

The Role of Videogames during Difficult Times: Through the Lens of Self-Determination Theory and the Dualistic Model of Passion
Supervisors
- Professor Daniel Johnson (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Selen Turkay (Associate Supervisor)
- Regan Mandryk (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis is an explanatory mixed-methods study aimed at advancing our knowledge on videogame engagement and player wellbeing in the context of difficult life situations. The series of projects that make up this thesis provide empirical evidence and insight into player experiences and uncovers mechanisms behind healthy versus potentially unhealthy videogame play, particularly highlighting the role of important psychological needs, emotion regulation, and escapism. These findings offer a foundation for future research to further investigate player experiences and to work alongside health practitioners to develop practical and therapeutic strategies for those facing challenging life events.

Co-Designing Augmented Reality Narratives for Identity Negotiation and Inclusion in STEM
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Alessandro Soro (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Margot Brereton (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This research explores how augmented reality (AR) can support more inclusive cultures in STEM higher education. Through interviews and co-design workshops with higher education students and alumni, the study developed AR storytelling tools that allowed participants to reflect on identity, share experiences, and imagine responses to discrimination. Rather than offering definitive solutions, the thesis presents participatory methods and design principles that invite ongoing dialogue and adaptation. It highlights the potential of AR to foster empathy and emotional connection while respecting the complexity of lived experiences.

A Decentralised Privacy-Preserving Data Processing Middleware
Supervisors
- Professor Raja Jurdak (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Gowri Ramachandran (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Sidra Malik (External Supervisor)
Citation
This research developed new methods to support secure, efficient, and privacy-preserving data sharing and processing across digital systems. It led to the design of tools that automate data handling, reduce system vulnerabilities, and protect sensitive information.
The thesis introduces three middleware solutions that improve real-time data flow and insight delivery in decentralised environments. These include built-in automation, distributed processing to remove single points of failure, and privacy-preserving techniques using encryption and secure computation. Demonstrated through real-world scenarios such as supply chains, the solutions enhance trust, transparency, and timely decision-making in data-driven ecosystems.

Unravelling the Effects of Videogame Rewards on Charitable Behaviour: Insights into Prosocial Engagement from Three Experimental Studies
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Selen Turkay (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Stephanie Tobin (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Daniel Johnson (Mentoring Supervisor)
Citation
This research project investigated the impact of videogame rewards on post-game charitable donations. No evidence for a previously published diminishing effect of videogame rewards on post-game charitable donations was found, but the prosocial transfer effect, the use of prosocial videogames to enhance post-game prosocial outcomes, such as donations to charity, was supported. Videogame rewards had measurable impacts on player experience outcomes, but it was the way that people reasoned about their helping actions in the videogame that significantly correlated with their post-game behaviour. Researchers and game developers can benefit from these findings in the design of their research and videogames.

Privacy-Preserving Prediction of Electric Vehicle Charge Events
Supervisors
- Professor Raja Jurdak (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Dimity Miller (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Sushmita Ruj (External Supervisor)
- Dr Sharif Abuadbba (External Supervisor)
Citation
Electric vehicles are expected to dominate global transport by 2050, creating major challenges for energy forecasting, infrastructure planning, and data privacy. This research introduces a privacy-preserving, decentralised framework that predicts when and where EVs will charge without exposing sensitive user information. Using hierarchical federated learning with advanced privacy and optimisation techniques, the system achieves accurate, scalable spatio-temporal forecasting across distributed EV networks. The findings support privacy-aware energy planning essential for future smart cities, helping balance grid demand while maintaining individual autonomy and data confidentiality.

Thesis Title
Generative Adversarial Networks for Longitudinal Data Imputation and Classification
Supervisors
- Professor Richi Nayak (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Yuefeng Li (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Md Bashar (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis develops deep generative model-based methods to address classification challenges in longitudinal data, particularly around missing values, incomplete records and instance heterogeneity. It shows that these models can better manage incomplete information, leading to more accurate and reliable predictions. Three novel frameworks were proposed to enable early prediction, integrate heterogeneous data types, and estimate uncertainty. Validated on real-world datasets, they outperformed existing methods on complex, incomplete data. These methods are applicable to domains such as healthcare and education, where decision-making from sparse, time-dependent data is critical, highlighting their significance in improving outcomes under real-world data limitations.

Thesis Title
Deep Learning Frameworks for Addressing Feature-Level Bias in Multimodal Fusion and Classification
Supervisors
- Professor Richi Nayak (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Md Bashar (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
In recent years, multimodal learning has attracted substantial attention for its ability to enhance the performance of machine learning tasks across diverse domains, such as social media analysis, healthcare diagnostics, and e-commerce. Although numerous multimodal classification frameworks have been proposed, many fail to account for the feature-level bias (FLB) commonly present in multimodal data. This thesis systematically investigates the FLB problem and introduces five novel deep learning frameworks that leverage gating mechanisms and uncertainty-guided strategies based on stochastic neural networks to effectively mitigate FLB and improve multimodal classification performance.

Remedial Game Prototype for Burns Rehab
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Dimitri Perrin (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Selen Turkay (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Frederic Maire (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This project uses human computer interaction with the aim to improve the rehabilitative outcomes for those patients with hand burns/injuries. A dedicated hand detection and classification system is developed especially for detecting bandaged and/or damaged hands, allowing for the elimination of infection concerns in hand rehabilitation. From this, a remedial game is developed to encourage patients, via the fun of playing a game, to perform rehabilitative hand exercises. Incorporated into the remedial game are strong customization options for the input controls, allowing for temporary or permanent disability, or for changing stages of patient recovery.
