New Methods in Bayesian Design for Monitoring Submerged Shoals Off the Coast of Western Australia

Citation

This PhD thesis develops advanced statistical methods within a Bayesian design framework to enable deeper parts of reefs to be efficiently and effectively monitored. This research addresses three main objectives: (1) Develop model-robust Bayesian design methods to optimise sampling under model uncertainty; (2) Advance Bayesian design in spatio-temporal settings via variational approximations for efficient computation; and (3) Develop a framework to leverage information from data-rich reefs to monitor data-poor reefs. Collectively, these contributions to the Bayesian design literature enable robust and efficient designs to be found and used for sustainable monitoring and management of our deeper reef ecosystems.

Numerical Solutions of Stochastic Delay-Differential Equations

Citation

Stochastic delay-differential equations are mathematical models that involve both randomness and time delays, with recent applications in physics, medicine, engineering, ecology, and finance. This thesis develops techniques to simulate solutions of these equations. Specific methods are presented for challenging cases, including high-dimensional systems and delays that do not align with simulation time steps. The thesis also provides strategies to make these simulations more accurate and efficient. Large-scale applications are included to demonstrate the practical value of the methods.

Scientific knowledge often extends beyond the available data. We develop statistical methods to combine mathematical models with information of any type – including expert knowledge, observed phenomena, and long-standing theories – offering valuable insights into complex and uncertain systems. We demonstrate the value of this information on a range of mathematical models, with a particular focus on ecosystem modelling when there is limited data. By integrating broader scientific knowledge into mathematical models, our predictions and analyses are driven by expertise rather than data availability, improving our understanding and management.

Shape and topology optimisation enable the design of material layouts to give improved mechanical or other properties subject to physical constraints. These computational techniques are relevant to a wide range of industrial applications and have a substantial mathematical foundation. The thesis aims to advance and improve the accessibility of computational techniques for level-set topology optimisation and apply the developed techniques to the design of extreme piezoelectric metamaterials. The thesis provides theoretical contributions to optimisation algorithms, efficient numerical methods, and shape calculus. It also provides new insights into piezoelectric metamaterial design for engineering applications.
