Professor Arthur ter Hofstede is a highly distinguished researcher and academic leader, who has made exceptional contributions to international research in the fields of Business Process Management and Process Analytics.
Professor ter Hofstede retired from QUT in June 2025 after 28 years of dedicated service. During that time, he held significant academic and leadership roles, including Head of the School of Information Systems and Principal Research Fellow. He has been Chief Investigator on major programs including the ARC Centre of Excellence for Creative Industries and Innovation, and the Food Agility CRC.

Professor ter Hofstede has made a lasting contribution to QUT and is widely respected by colleagues and collaborators for his dedication to both research and teaching and is especially recognised for his mentorship and support of early-career academics. His leadership transformed the Business Process Management Discipline into a world-class research group and strengthened the School of Information Systems through curriculum innovation, research quality, and collaborative culture.
Professor ter Hofstede holds a Doctor of Philosophy (Computer Science) (1993) and a Master of Computer Science (1989) both from University of Nijmegen (now Radboud University).
In recognition of his sustained and substantial academic service, QUT Council has awarded Professor Arthur ter Hofstede the title of Professor Emeritus.

Thesis Title
Pistis: Development of a Holistic Theory of Trust
Supervisors
- Professor Peter Bruza (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Andrew Gibson (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis offers a new way of understanding trust, moving beyond fragmented and discipline-specific models to frame trust as a dynamic, relational mode of being-in-the-world. Drawing on philosophy, cognitive science, and quantum theory, it reconceives trust not as a discrete judgement, but as an embodied and indeterminate process. By bridging the study of lived experience with quantum-inspired formal modelling, the thesis lays the foundation for a more integrated and holistic science of trust.

Thesis Title
Business Model Portfolios and Strategic IT/IS Alignment in the Digital Age: A Study Into (Legal) Professional Services Firms
Supervisors
- Dr Erwin Fielt (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Kevin Desouza (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Guy Gable (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examines how legal professional services firms that manage multiple business models as a portfolio can achieve strategic IT/IS alignment. It identifies three emerging, interdependent business models in law firms; explores how managing a business model portfolio with synergies and tensions can create value opportunities; and extends the IT/IS alignment discussion to organizations operating such portfolios.

Thesis Title
Deep Learning Explainability for Predictive Process Analytics via Intrinsic Techniques
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Chun Ouyang (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Yue Xu (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Catarina Pinto Moreira (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigates how to develop intrinsically explainable deep learning architectures for process prediction using process event logs as input. It extends this core aim by addressing key research questions: how to effectively incorporate event-level and case-level attributes into the explanation; how to present the resulting explanations in a user-oriented format; and how to evaluate the understandability of these explanations through user studies.
