Realtime Structured and Visually Correctable Representations for Robotic Manipulation
Supervisors
- Professor Michael Milford (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Niko Suenderhauf (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Feras Dayoub (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis presents a new way for robots to understand and interact with the world using vision. It introduces a real-time, physically grounded 3D representation that allows robots to build and continuously update a digital twin of their environment as it changes. By combining advanced visual reconstruction techniques with physics-based prediction, the framework enables robots to track dynamic scenes, anticipate the effects of their actions, and learn manipulation skills efficiently. This approach reduces the gap between simulation and reality, making robot training faster, more reliable, and more robust in real-world settings.

Control of a Multiport Modular Multilevel Converter in a Residential Generation and Storage System
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Dezso Sera (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Geoffrey Walker (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis looks at simpler and more flexible ways to connect renewable energy sources, such as solar panels, fuel cells and batteries, to the power grid. It focuses on a modular power converter that allows different energy sources to be added or removed easily. The research reviews existing designs and identifies the most suitable option for residential energy systems. A new plug and play control approach is developed so modules connect and operate efficiently without complex setup. An estimation tool, called an observer, is also introduced to reduce sensors and communication needs while maintaining reliable, high quality power delivery.

Adaptive Flight Formation Using Control Barrier Functions
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Luis Mejias Alvarez (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Aaron McFadyen (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Sayan Basu Roy (External Supervisor)
- Dr Sujit Baliyarasimhuni (External Supervisor)
Citation
Coordinating teams of autonomous robots presents significant challenges, particularly due to the risks of collisions and communication loss. This research introduces innovative, decentralized safety algorithms that offer mathematical guarantees, enabling robots to collaborate on complex tasks, such as formation flying, while maintaining connectivity and avoiding crashes.
These algorithms function as dynamic virtual barriers, continuously ensuring safety. The thesis explores and compares various strategies for managing multiple safety constraints, emphasizing the prioritization of collision avoidance over formation precision. Their effectiveness is demonstrated through simulations and physical robots.

Enhancing UAV Autonomy: Decision Making under Uncertainty for Object Searching in GNSS-Denied and Low Visibility Environments
Supervisors
- Professor Luis Gonzalez (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Fernando Vanegas Alvarez (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis presents NAVCORE, a fully autonomous navigation framework that allows drones to safely explore hazardous environments where Global Navigation Satellite Systems and visibility are limited. NAVCORE enables drones to navigate and make their own decisions using onboard sensors, real-time object detection, and a decision-making algorithm that accounts for uncertainty. The framework was tested in high-fidelity simulations and real flight experiments using a small, lightweight drone. The experiments demonstrate that the drone can reliably navigate indoor environments filled with obstacles to locate people without human control, offering a practical solution to support search-and-rescue teams in perilous situations.

Visual Localisation Introspection for Robots and Autonomous Systems
Supervisors
- Professor Michael Milford (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Jason Ford (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Mobile robots relying on camera-based localisation must know when to trust their own position estimates — especially in safety- or mission-critical contexts. This thesis addresses that challenge, presenting both machine-learned and training-free methods for autonomous robots to self-assess their own visual localisation performance as they move through real-world environments. Results demonstrate that a robot can learn to distinguish trustworthy position estimates from unreliable ones, leading to safer navigation decisions.

Adapting Vision-Language Models for Robotic Object Detection
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Christopher Lehnert (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor William Browne (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Feras Dayoub (External Supervisor)
Citation
Language-image pre-training using internet-scale data has produced Vision-Language Models (VLMs) that can detect objects described with natural language. However, a domain shift remains between the captioned images used to train a VLM and the complex data streams collected by a robot. As such, existing VLMs are likely to underperform in robotic deployment environments. In response, this thesis proposes practical approaches to adapting a pre-trained VLM for use in robotic object detection. The aim is to address challenges faced by robotic systems that are ignored by existing adaptation strategies, while ensuring that performance is improved for diverse natural language concepts.

Heterogeneous Sensing Methodologies for Robust Localisation in Challenging Conditions
Supervisors
- Professor Michael Milford (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Tobias Fischer (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Reliable navigation is a major challenge for autonomous vehicles, especially in complex environments with changing scenery and extreme lighting. This research developed novel algorithms for robotic localisation, drawing on bio-inspired models and leveraging data from specialised LiDAR and event-based cameras. By creating tailored methods that overcome the unique blind spots of each sensor, this study allows vehicles to locate themselves even when GPS fails. These methods were proven effective across conditions ranging from dense forests to night-time city streets. Ultimately, this research builds a resilient foundation for autonomous systems navigating the unpredictable real world.

UAS Remote Sensing and Artificial Intelligence for Risk Assessment Support and Real-Time Detection of Bushfires
Supervisors
- Professor Luis Gonzalez (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Grant Hamilton (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Bushfires increasingly threaten homes at bushland–urban interfaces, but current risk maps and building rules cannot accurately assess risk for individual buildings. This research shows that drones or uncrewed aerial systems (UASs) with artificial intelligence can provide detailed, building-level risk assessment and early fire detection of bushfire. Using UAS-based remote sensing, the study maps vegetation, predicts how fire heat affects nearby buildings, and detects bushfires in real-time, offering a safer, faster, and more cost-effective way to protect communities and guide emergency decisions.

The Stability Performance Enhancement of Grid-Connected Inverters in Weak Grid
Supervisors
- Dr Ghavameddin Nourbakhsh (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Yateendra Mishra (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Amin Mokaribolhassan (External Supervisor)
- Gerard Ledwich
Citation
The thesis presents an integrated estimation and control framework to enhance the stability, synchronisation, and fault ride-through capabilities of grid-following (GFL) inverters in critically weak grids. To overcome conventional Phase-Locked Loop (PLL) instability under high grid impedance, the research proposes a Modified Virtual Impedance-PLL (MVI-PLL) and an Advanced Angle Estimation Kalman Filter with a Linear Quadratic Regulator (AAEKF-LQR). By incorporating real-time DFT-RLS grid impedance estimation, the framework seamlessly adapts to dynamic network conditions. The system ensures robust fault ride-through compliance, enforces dynamic current limits, and effectively suppresses 3-15 Hz electromechanical oscillations from high-power synchronous machines.

Robust Scene Coordinate Regression for Large-scale Visual Localisation
Supervisors
- Dr Tobias Fischer (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Alejandro Fontan Villacampa (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Michael Milford (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Determining a camera's exact position and orientation from an image is essential for self-driving cars, robots, and augmented reality, but becomes unreliable when different places look alike. This thesis introduces three techniques that make such systems smarter, more accurate, and more robust in large, complex environments. The first focuses model training on the most useful scene features. The second enriches local image details with broader location context. The third ensures that location cues remain geometrically consistent, reducing confusion in visually similar scenes.

Bridging Aerial and Ground Perspectives: Deep Learning Approaches for Cross-View Person Re-Identification
Supervisors
- Dr Kien Nguyen Thanh (Principal Supervisor)
- Emeritus Professor Subramanian Sridharan (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Clinton Fookes (Mentoring Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigated person re-identification across aerial and ground cameras: recognising the same individual as they move between drones and fixed CCTV. New datasets, deep learning architectures, and a three-dimensional representation were developed to bridge the differences in viewpoint, scale and lighting that make this matching difficult, and a first-of-its-kind aerial-ground infrared dataset was released to handle poor lighting. The proposed methods achieved state-of-the-art accuracy across image, video, and cross-modality benchmarks. The released datasets and two associated international challenges provide a foundation for more reliable aerial-ground surveillance in real-world applications.

Efficient Subnets for Scalable Onboard AI in Space
Supervisors
- Professor Clinton Fookes (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Kien Nguyen Thanh (Associate Supervisor)
- Wei Xiang
- Arnold Wiliem
Citation
Modern artificial intelligence is too large to run on the nanosatellites commonly used in space, which have strict limits on compute, memory, and communication with ground stations. This thesis developed four efficient deep-learning methods aimed at addressing the major constraints facing onboard AI in space. The methods let neural networks change size to match available power, train on synthetic data, transfer the broad capabilities of large vision-language models into small networks, and autonomously flag novel observations to prioritise for transmission.
