Cosmopolitan Practices in Digital Publics: The Case of Responses to Russia's War on Ukraine

Supervisors

  • Professor Axel Bruns (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Ehsan Dehghan (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Stephen Wan (External Supervisor)
  • Ms Shima Khanehzar (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores how cosmopolitanism, or an attitude of openness and responsibility towards those outside of one's nation, is practised by social media users during Russia's war on Ukraine. Through a mixed-methods exploration of three case studies, it highlights cosmopolitan practices that display a higher degree of commitment, and practices that have only a limited potential for it. Overall, cosmopolitan practices are possible in low-trust, digitally networked environments such as Twitter, but at significant cost to practitioners. The thesis suggests several ways to reduce this cost, supporting practices of digital citizenship during wars and crises.

Rohingya Diaspora and Everyday Digital Media Practices: (Im)mobility, Identity and Integration

Supervisors

  • Professor Michael Dezuanni (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Peta Mitchell (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This study investigates how stateless Rohingya refugees living in Australia, and in the Cox’s Bazar refugee camps in Bangladesh, use digital media in different forms for their survival, identity formation, sense of belonging and resettlement processes. The study takes a global perspective in examining the everyday digital media practices of Rohingya refugees and investigates how digital inclusion and participation play out in sociocultural and spatial conditions. It provides new directions for research by contributing to theorisations of (im)mobility in digital migration studies, media and communication studies.

Neo-Nazis, Neutralisations, and Narratives: Identifying Techniques of Neutralisation within Australian Right-Wing Extremist Groups' Narrative Construction

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Jodi Death (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Angela Higginson (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

Right-wing extremist groups present an increasing threat within Australia. This research examines how these groups use persuasive narratives to justify hatred, promote exclusion, and recruit supporters. Analysing online extremist materials such as manifestos, and propaganda, this thesis identifies how moral justifications, known as techniques of neutralisation, are used to excuse or defend harmful behaviour. The study demonstrates that these strategies help sustain extremist worldviews and strengthen group identity. By developing a new framework for analysing extremist narratives, this research contributes to a deeper understanding of radicalisation and supports future education and counter-extremism initiatives in Australia.

Phantasmagoric Publics and Public Sphere(s): Analysing the Discursive Dynamics of Emerging Digital Publics on Social Media in India

Supervisors

  • Professor Axel Bruns (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Timothy Graham (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Ehsan Dehghan (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines three interconnected case studies unfolding on Twitter/X: the Farmers’ Protests, the Boycott Bollywood campaign, and the India China border skirmish. Together, they illustrate varied yet overlapping forms of emergent digital publics shaped by contentious sociopolitical conditions. To analyse these dynamics, the thesis introduces the concept of phantasmagoric publics, drawing on Walter Benjamin and discourse theory to describe digitally mediated collectives driven by emotionally resonant, ideologically charged narratives. By applying this framework, the research contributes to scholarship on digital publics in postcolonial contexts, highlighting both the political power and epistemic fragility of contemporary digital participation in India.

Making White History in Australia

Supervisors

  • Dr Juliana Mclaughlin (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Courtney Pedersen (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Kate Fullagar (External Supervisor)

Citation

This practice-led research examines the construction of whiteness as a racial category in Australia and its enduring intergenerational impacts on First Nations peoples, histories, cultures, and lands. The research contributes to discourses on First Nations rights, cultural sovereignty, and gender justice in Australia. Through practice-led inquiry, it challenges entrenched colonial narratives and offers alternative ways of knowing and being that centre Indigenous perspectives and resists the pervasive influence of whiteness. Practice-led, decolonial, and Black feminist perspectives underpin the research design, offering an interdisciplinary approach to examining systemic racism and patriarchy.

A Modular Software Toolkit for Weibo Data Collection: Towards Sustainable, Comprehensive and Inclusive Data Infrastructure

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Timothy Graham (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Daniel Angus (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This project develops a modular software toolkit for systematic Weibo data collection, addressing critical gaps in platform data access and establishing a reproducible framework for long-term data infrastructure in computational communication research. Through two large-scale empirical use cases, the thesis demonstrates how the toolkit enables comprehensive data capture beyond standalone posts, including nested interactions and longitudinal reconstruction at scale. It advances sustainable toolkit design and methodological standardisation under evolving platform constraints. By providing both practical tools and design workflows, the project contributes to ethical and independent research infrastructure, strengthening the capacity for robust knowledge production in digital platform research.

Improving Support Systems and Approaches for Autistic Survivors: The Experiences and Insights of Australian Practitioners who Support Autistic Women who are Survivors of Sexual and Domestic Violence

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Jodi Death (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Julie-Anne Carroll (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis explores the issue of sexual and domestic violence for autistic women and how services can better meet their needs. The thesis examines autistic women's experiences of violence in relation to factors such as gender inequality and disadvantage associated with being neurodivergent in a world not designed to accommodate their needs. This thesis then explores these factors based on insights captured from Australian practitioners who support autistic survivors of sexual and domestic violence. These insights and experiences from practitioners are additionally examined and applied to consider how support services and systems can better support the needs of autistic survivors.

Climate Change “Hoax” Hashtags on Instagram: Multimodal Discourse in Social Media Mis/disinformation Posts

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Michelle Riedlinger (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Daniel Angus (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis interrogates problematic information on Instagram aligned with climate “hoax” communities, by examining images, hashtags, and other features alongside text: that is, multimodally. It finds that climate hoax discourse, instead of disputing climate science alone, amplifies other, broader worldviews of hostility and suspicion. Methodologically, this thesis combines unsupervised machine learning and multimodal critical discourse analysis, introducing the concept of visual signatures. Salient visual signatures align climate denial with organised climate contrarian actors and conspiratorial or otherwise fringe communities. Understanding the worldviews of these communities, and how they communicate multimodally, is crucial for information integrity.

Capturing and Sharing Market Vendors' Perspectives on Safety in Urban Markets in Papua New Guinea

Supervisors

  • Dr Juliana Mclaughlin (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Claire Brophy (Associate Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Verena Thomas (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Jackie Kauli (External Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Laurie Buys (External Supervisor)

Citation

This research examined market vendors’ perspectives on community strategies to enhance safety in the urban informal market in Papua New Guinea. Adopting the postcolonial concept of hybridity, the research identified local strategies and values that vendors create and apply to maintain safety in contrast to the dominant deficit narratives of urban informal market. Creative workshops included storytelling, and photography complemented focus group discussions and interviews as primary data collection methods. In the absence of formal support systems, this study concludes that urban market communities’ resilience and productivity are informed by diverse indigenous values and knowledge systems.

His Needs Versus Her Chores: Understanding Young Women's Lived Experiences of Digital Dating Abuse During Adolescence and the Associated Impacts

Supervisors

  • Dr Laura Vitis (Principal Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Associate Professor Bridget Harris (External Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Angela Higginson (Mentoring Supervisor)

Citation

This study provides the first cross-country empirical analysis of adolescent digital dating abuse victimisation based on the lived experiences of young women living in Australia and Brazil.  It offers insights into how to conceptualise dating and digital dating abuse during adolescence;  identifies three main forms of digital dating abuse during adolescence; reveals four main forms of impacts resulting from adolescent digital dating abuse; and highlights how entrenched harmful gendered and technological norms are in adolescent lives and how they shape digital dating abuse victimisation, perpetration and impacts.

Safe to ‘Make the First Move’? Exploring Experiences of Intrusion and Safety Work for Indian Women on Bumble

Supervisors

  • Dr Laura Vitis (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Zahra Stardust (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Michael Flood (Mentoring Supervisor)

Citation

Bumble promises safe, empowering dating, yet many Indian women face harassment, stalking and privacy threats. Using interviews and the scroll-back method with 22 women aged 18 to 35, this thesis shows that safety features often shift safety work onto women who rely on constant surveillance and secrecy. The study explains how norms around honour, family surveillance, caste and class shape what feels safe and what women can report. This thesis calls for culturally sensitive design, clearer reporting feedback and greater transparency for dating platforms.

Fostering Connectedness: A Design Exploration for Australia’s International Students in the Wake of COVID-19 Pandemic

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Zhengye Hou (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Lesley Hawkes (Associate Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Jeremy Kerr (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

In Australia international students are often uncertain about where and how to find support networks within their communities. This problem was worsened by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to widespread 'disconnectedness' from essential support networks. Using a co-design process with students and staff, this study explored connectedness through communication and interaction design. The findings informed the development of a set of design principles and two digital app concepts that embody the new 3A conceptual model - access, assimilation, and action - a practical framework for support providers to create engaging experiences that help international students navigate support ecosystem in a post-pandemic world.

A Deep Learning-based Computational Framework for Detecting and Analysing Multimodal Online Coordinated Behaviour

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Timothy Graham (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Simon Denman (Associate Supervisor)
    Professor Daniel Angus (Mentoring Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines multimodal online coordinated behaviours and develops a computational detection framework that extends the traditionally limited understanding of such behaviours, while enabling the evaluation and application of multimodal deep learning models in this field. The results reveal both intersections and divergences between text-based coordination and multimodal coordination detected by the proposed approaches and highlight nuanced differences in temporal dynamics and organisational patterns. The findings provide a more holistic understanding of coordinated online behaviour that explicitly incorporates image-based and multimodal elements. In doing so, it provides an additional perspective on core coordination questions, particularly those concerning automation and authenticity.
