Honorary Doctorate

Ufficiale The Honourable Teresa Gambaro

Ufficiale The Honourable Teresa Gambaro is a distinguished leader whose 17-year career in the Australian Parliament shaped national policy and international engagement.

She has served in senior roles including Assistant Minister for Immigration, and Parliamentary Secretary to the Ministers for Foreign Affairs and Trade, and Defence. She drove major foreign affairs and immigration reforms, launching the Smart Traveller initiative, coordinating evacuations from conflict zones, and advancing refugee protections. She was the first woman elected to both the Federal seat of Brisbane and the Federal seat of Petrie, and is a strong advocate for gender equality. Prior to retiring from her political career, she chaired the largest and most influential committee in the Australian Parliament, The Foreign Affairs, Defence and Trade Committee.

Ms Gambaro’s enduring relationship with QUT reflects her commitment to education and leadership development. A QUT alumna, she has tutored in the QUT Business School and served as a mentor in the Executive Women’s Program. She is a founding sponsor and Advisory Committee member of the QUT Pathways to Politics for Women program, which since 2020 has empowered over 100 women to pursue political leadership. Her mentorship and advocacy have helped reshape Australia’s political landscape.

Ms Gambaro holds a Bachelor of Business (Economics and Marketing) from QUT (1981).

In 2017 she was awarded a Knighthood of the Italian Republic – Ufficiale al Merito della Republica Italia.

In recognition of her distinguished service to QUT and the community, QUT Council has awarded Ufficiale The Honourable Teresa Gambaro Doctor of the University.

DIATOMA: A Robotically Fabricated Biomimetic Lightweight Pavilion

Citation

The construction industry faces growing challenges from material waste and the demand for customised architectural forms. This research explores how nature’s design principles can inspire lightweight, efficient structures through computational design and robotic fabrication. Inspired by diatoms, DIATOMA, a bespoke shell pavilion made from thin aluminium sheets shaped using Robotic Incremental Sheet Forming (RISF) and connected with customised 3D-printed joints, was developed. A novel design-to-fabrication workflow was also introduced that eliminates formwork, reduces material use, allows for assembly and disassembly, and demonstrates how biomimetic and robotic methods can create sustainable, high-performance architectural structures with both structural and aesthetic integrity.
