Emeritus Professor

Professor Amanda Gudmundsson

Professor Amanda Gudmundsson is an accomplished academic leader who has made exceptional contributions to QUT by driving strategic transformation and advancing the university’s international profile.

Her research expertise in positive psychology, leadership capability, and organisational wellbeing have contributed to improved workplace practices and inclusion. She is recognised for promoting positive organisational change and providing strong leadership and mentorship across the institution.

Professor Gudmundsson retired from QUT in December 2024 after 26 years of dedicated service. During that time, she held significant academic and leadership roles, including Head of the School of Design; Associate Dean, Learning and Teaching; and Executive Dean of QUT Business School. In 2021, she managed the merger between QUT Business School and QUT Faculty of Law. As Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business and Law she was responsible for one of Queensland’s largest business schools – ranked in the global top 1% with triple international accreditation – and one of Queensland’s largest schools of law.

She was critical in leading the Business School to successful reaccreditations with external international business school agencies, and her leadership extended beyond her formal appointment to include committee memberships, mentoring, and peer-review roles with multiple international business school accreditation agencies.

Professor Gudmundsson holds a Doctor of Philosophy (2003), a 1st class Honours degree in Psychology (1994), and a Bachelor of Behavioural Science (1993) all from Griffith University, and a Graduate Certificate in Education (Higher Education) (2006) from QUT.

In recognition of her sustained and substantial academic service, QUT Council has awarded Professor Amanda Gudmundsson the title of Professor Emeritus.

Thesis Title

Transparency and Responsibility in Information Dissemination: Institutional Roles and Practices

Supervisors

  • Professor Benno Torgler (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Frank Mathmann (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Ho Chan (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how key institutions influence the transparency and credibility of information shared in the digital public sphere and scientific publishing. It analyses misinformation accusations on Twitter during the 2020 United States presidential election to understand how users contribute to shaping political conversation online. It then studies data sharing practices in economics journals and explores the factors that explain the time taken to withdraw flawed research from the scientific record. By revealing how institutional policies shape accountability and trust, the research offers insights for strengthening integrity in science and improving the quality of public debate.

Thesis Title

Decision-Making in the Emergency Department: Understanding Patients' Self-Triage and Nurses' Triage Choices

Supervisors

  • Professor Benno Torgler (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Changxia Ke (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Ho Chan (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how behavioural and psychological factors influence decision-making in the emergency department, with a focus on self-triage decisions made by non-urgent patients and triage decisions made by emergency triage nurses. Drawing on three empirical studies, this thesis investigates how personality traits, health anxiety, cognitive biases, and risk-taking behaviour shape healthcare decisions under the conditions of uncertainty and incomplete information. The findings reveal critical insights into patients’ choices, clinical judgment, and the interplay of psychological factors in the triage decision-making process. These insights have important implications for improving patients' health outcomes, optimising healthcare utilisation, and strengthening triage education.

Thesis Title

Beyond Boundaries — Mixed-Use Megaprojects and Property Markets: A Symbiosis

Supervisors

  • Professor Connie Susilawati (Principal Supervisor)
  • Dr Andrea Blake (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Johari Hussein Nassor Amar (External Supervisor)

Citation

Cities increasingly turn to mixed-use megaprojects to stimulate growth and redefine their global identity. Brisbane’s skyline is experiencing a transformation of a lifetime, with long-term development impacts that must be carefully monitored. The synergy of major infrastructure projects promises substantial benefits that need to be captured, measured, and analysed. Revealing market preferences, this thesis examines how property markets respond to such urban interventions. The research identifies an intangible value transfer within the urban fabric across multiple spatial scales. A longitudinal analysis across time and space advances a framework linking market dynamics with generational value for the city and wider region.

Local Public Expenditure Performance, Intergovernmental Transfers, and Development: Insights for Policy Making in Indonesia

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Boon Lee (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Clevo Wilson (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how Indonesia’s local governments manage public funds and how this affects local people’s welfare. It finds that municipalities in more developed regions often spend more efficiently than lagging districts, leading to uneven development outcomes. Efficient spending can drive growth, reduce poverty, and strengthen human development. The study argues for fairer and more tailored policies, alongside appropriate fiscal transfers, to improve service delivery and reduce disparities. It offers practical insights for fostering a more balanced and equitable pattern of development across regions.

Disposition Effect in Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) Investors

Supervisors

  • Professor Anup Basu (Principal Supervisor)
  • Adjunct Professor Uwe Dulleck (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr D B P Hareendra Dissabandara (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines whether Australian Self-Managed Superannuation Fund (SMSF) investors exhibit disposition effect, i.e. hold losing stocks for too long and sell winners too soon. I find that SMSF investors are prone to this bias, though to a lesser extent than other retail investors. The effect varies by account type, tax status, market conditions, as well as trading frequency and accumulated trading experience. While disposition effect results in poorer short-term portfolio performance, I find this trend to reverse over longer horizons.

Thesis Title

Environmental, Social, and Governance Risk Spill-Over Effect in the Supply Chain

Supervisors

  • Professor Larelle Chapple (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Pamela Kent (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Hongtao Shen (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis examines how suppliers’ environmental, social and governance (ESG) reputational risks spill over to affect customer firms’ stock value and their relationships with suppliers. It finds that negative media coverage of suppliers’ ESG issues harms customer stock prices and weakens customer–supplier ties. By analysing Chinese listed firms and their top suppliers, the research shows that these spill-over risks are shaped by firm visibility, regulation, and dependence. The findings highlight the importance of monitoring supplier behaviour for managers, investors, and policymakers aiming to build resilient and sustainable supply chains.
