The Persuasiveness of Travel Influencers in Sustainable Tourism
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Lisa Schuster (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Udo Gottlieb (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Increasing environmental awareness has led to a rise in sustainable travel influencers promoting eco-friendly travel options, but research on their effectiveness in encouraging sustainable destination choices remains limited. This study explores the influence of sustainable travel influencers in promoting eco-friendly destinations. Using a mixed-method approach, including interviews and surveys with followers, it examines influencers' and their contents' key characteristics. The findings highlight authenticity, credibility, perceived attractiveness, and environmental and social concern as important characteristics. Additionally, a balanced mix of informative and entertaining content, with impartial reviews of sustainable destinations, enhances persuasiveness, offering insights for tourism organisations in selecting influencers.

Green Gets the Gold: Regulatory Mode in Eco-Friendly Airbnb Listings and Alexa Reviews
Supervisors
- Dr Edwina Luck (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Di Wang (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Frank Mathmann (Associate Supervisor)
- Mr Anthony Wright (External Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigates how people judge digital products and services. The first part shows that Airbnb listings with “green” features (e.g. solar panels) earn higher prices, especially when described with evaluative language, without lowering booking demand. The second part examines voice assistants (Alexa and Spotify), showing that people focused on action (“locomotors”) prefer the first version they try, while people focused on careful comparison (“assessors”) give consistently higher ratings across different versions. Using advanced text analysis of large booking and review datasets, the research offers insights for both theory and practical design of digital platforms and products.

Enhancing Gender Balance in Nonprofit CEO Positions: How Women Make it to the Top
Supervisors
- Professor Belinda Luke (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Michael Rosemann (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Terrance Fitzsimmons (External Supervisor)
- Adjunct Associate Professor Wendy Scaife (External Supervisor)

This thesis explores the underrepresentation of women in nonprofit CEO positions and identifies individual and structural enablers and barriers for women in reaching this position. Focus groups and interviews were conducted with peak nonprofit body leaders, nonprofit CEOs, and executive recruiters. Using Bourdieu’s framework of capital, habitus, and field, findings provide insights for women seeking to become nonprofit CEOs on how to achieve this career goal. Recommendations are also offered to the nonprofit sector and policymakers to counter structural barriers hindering women from progressing into nonprofit CEO positions.

How Travel Mindsets Transform and Shape Sustainable Behaviour
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Anne Lane (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Char-lee McLennan (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Udo Gottlieb (Associate Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Shane Mathews (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis explores how tourism can reshape our mindsets and catalyse meaningful personal and behavioural transformation. Using a mixed-methods design that combines in-depth interviews with 25 Australian travellers and a national survey of 1,800 adults, she finds that a growth mindset develops through a lifelong learning loop: beginning with curiosity, deepening through mindfulness, and strengthened by reflection. This mindset predicts greater adaptability, well-being, and sustainable behaviour, with reflection playing a key mediating role. This research offers a powerful theoretical model and real-world insights into how travel can help us grow into more thoughtful, adaptable, and responsible global citizens.

Beyond the Dyad Shifting Gears in Human-Robot Interaction Across Service Industries
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Frank Mathmann (Principal Supervisor)
- Adjunct Professor Rebekah Russell-Bennett (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Gaby Odekerken (External Supervisor)
- Professor Dominik Mahr (External Supervisor)
Citation
Service robots are increasingly deployed across hospitality, education, and healthcare to address workforce challenges and enhance service delivery. This research investigated how different types of service robots transform relationships between human actors in real-world service settings, moving beyond traditional one-on-one interactions to examine complex constellations of actors. Through field studies across multiple industries, the findings reveal how service robots can augment or substitute human workers while creating value for customers, employees, and organizations. The research demonstrates that successful service robot implementation requires understanding not just immediate service interactions, but broader ecosystem implications involving multiple stakeholders across organizational and societal levels.

Social Capital and Regulatory Scrutiny: Evidence from Stock Exchange Comment Letters in China
Supervisors
- Dr Yuyu Zhang (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Xin Qu (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis examines how social relationships and community trust, known as social capital, influence regulatory oversight in China’s stock markets through comment letters. It finds that firms located in more trusting regions or with stronger firm-level social capital face fewer and less severe comment letters from stock exchange regulators, especially those with strong internal and external governance. Further analysis reveals two underlying channels: social capital improves disclosure quality and reduces fraudulent behaviour; it encourages corporate philanthropy as a strategic investment in social reputation. These findings highlight the importance of informal governance in improving corporate transparency, accountability, and market integrity.
