Honorary Doctorate

Mrs Linda Lavarch

Linda Lavarch is a distinguished leader whose career spans law, politics, and governance. Serving in the Legislative Assembly of Queensland from 1997 to 2009, she made history as the first woman lawyer elected to the Queensland Parliament and again in 2005 as the State’s first woman Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, where she pursued an active reform agenda focused on community justice initiatives and the treatment of vulnerable people in the criminal justice system.

Beyond politics, Mrs Lavarch has held senior governance roles across health, housing, and the nonprofit sector. She is currently a Board Director of Metro North Hospital and Health Service, Australia’s largest public health provider, and President of Volunteering Queensland. Nationally, she chaired the Not-for-Profit Sector Reform Council, which played a crucial role in establishing the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission, a landmark initiative in nonprofit regulation.

A QUT alumna, Mrs Lavarch’s enduring connection to QUT spans active senior advisory roles in the Faculty of Business and Law, and service on QUT Council. She has been an instrumental sponsor and advisor to the QUT Pathways to Politics for Women program, which since 2020 has equipped over 100 women to pursue political leadership. Her mentorship and advocacy have helped reshape Australia’s political landscape.

Mrs Lavarch holds a Bachelor of Laws (1986) and Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice (1987), both from Queensland Institute of Technology.

In recognition of her distinguished service to QUT and the community, QUT Council has awarded Linda Lavarch Doctor of the University.

Thesis Title

Organisational Control and Employee Outcomes in Mandatory Work from Home: Evidence from Bangladesh During the COVID-19 Pandemic

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Erica French (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Muhammad Ali (Associate Supervisor)
  • Professor Kevin Desouza (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

The COVID-19 pandemic initiated the world’s largest remote work experiment, compelling organisations to reassess how they manage employees working from home. This thesis examines two Bangladeshi organisations in manufacturing and telecommunications to analyse control dynamics during mandatory work from home arrangements. Presenting a multi-level model, it demonstrates how control mechanisms, managerial control styles, and employees’ self-management influence job satisfaction, performance, and wellbeing. The study identifies crisis-specific leadership style, gendered visibility practices, and the role of job-related psychological ownership in shaping employee outcomes. These insights provide evidence-based guidance for developing effective, tailored remote and hybrid work models in the post-pandemic context.

Thesis Title

An Investigation of Women’s Representation in Information Technology

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Muhammad Ali (Principal Supervisor)
  • Associate Professor Erica French (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis investigates why women remain underrepresented in the Australian information technology industry and how workplace systems shape their career outcomes. It combines three studies to explore gender equality policies, examine hiring practices, and evaluate performance review systems, demonstrating how bias operates across organizational levels. The research shows that women’s representation improves when policies and practices work together, but stereotypes and biased evaluations continue to limit progress. The findings offer practical insights for organizations seeking to build inclusive cultures and create fair pathways for women’s recruitment, retention, and career progression in the technology sector.

Thesis Title

The Role of Digital Transformation in Innovation-Based Competitive Strategy and Firm Performance

Supervisors

  • Associate Professor Sandeep Salunke (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Marek Kowalkiewicz (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This research examined how firms, specifically, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) can leverage digital transformation (DT) to boost their innovation and gain a competitive advantage. It found that DT most benefits innovation by enhancing knowledge and resource integration. Firms that benefit most are those that possess unique dynamic capabilities and align their digital transformation initiatives with their strategies and capabilities in response to market and environmental dynamics. This alignment enables them to absorb relevant knowledge and integrate it efficiently for innovation.

Thesis Title

It's the Thought That Counts: Expanding Employee HR Attributions About Wellness Programs

Supervisors

  • Professor Nerina Jimmieson (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Lisa Bradley (Associate Supervisor)
  • Dr Martin Edwards (External Supervisor)

Citation

This thesis focuses on employees’ attributions about their organization’s reasons for providing HR practices, referred to as HR attributions. An expanded set of HR attributions were examined across three studies through which HR attributions were identified via extensive conceptual work and then applied in qualitative and quantitative studies with employee samples who had access to a wellness program in their workplace. Results showed that employees hold a variety of attributions about why their organization provides wellness programs. Through latent profile analysis, four profiles of attributions were identified which were shown to be linked to employee well-being outcomes in various ways.

Thesis Title

The Impact of Geopolitical Risks on Dynamic Capabilities within a Supermajor International Oil Company

Supervisors

  • Professor Robert Perrons (Principal Supervisor)
  • Professor Kevin Desouza (Associate Supervisor)

Citation

This investigation examines the impact of geopolitical risks on the dynamic capabilities and firm performance of a supermajor international oil company across 20 countries worldwide. In doing so, it contributes to our understanding of the limitations of dynamic capability theory within the energy industry, and suggests several context-specific approaches to capability development within that sector.  Also, by challenging the more popular measures of geopolitical risk in the literature, it extends the conventional understanding of geopolitical risk management in the energy industry.  Finally, it explores how these findings directly impact how incumbent energy firms should approach the energy transition.
