Thesis Title
Preparation and Characterisation of 2D Materials-Based Polymer Composites
Supervisors
- Professor Cheng Yan (Principal Supervisor)
- Distinguished Professor Dmitri Golberg (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Since the successful exfoliation of monolayer graphene, a wide variety of 2D nanomaterials has been developed, which is a very encouraging prospect for the future of the field of advanced nanocomposites. Despite the enormous potential of these materials and their nanocomposites, the defects at nano and micro levels are major obstacles in the way of reaching the maximum performance. The focus of the current thesis is to utilise the unique advantages of GO and MoS2 to develop bioinspired nanocomposite aerogels and films with reduced defects and enhanced mechanical performance.

Advancing Short-Term Traffic Flow Forecasting with Representation Learning
Supervisors
- Professor Ashish Bhaskar (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Richi Nayak (Associate Supervisor)
- Professor Paul Corry (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Short term traffic forecasting traditional methods generally ignore the stable relationships between roads or fail to adapt when traffic conditions change. This makes predictions less accurate and less useful for managing congestion. This thesis develops artificial intelligence models that balance both stability and adaptability, learning how roads interact and how patterns evolve throughout the day. The approach delivers clearer and more dependable forecasts, helping reduce congestion, improve travel reliability, and support the development of safer and smarter transport systems for the future.

The Influence of Recovered Carbon Black (rCB), on the Properties and Performance of rCB Modified Hot Mix Asphalt
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Chaminda Gallage (Principal Supervisor)
- Professor Leslie Dawes (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Gregory Stephenson (External Supervisor)
Citation
This research addressed the challenge of improving road durability while reducing environmental waste. It found that using recovered carbon black (rCB) from waste tyres as a filler in asphalt mixtures can enhance pavement performance and sustainability. Laboratory testing showed that small amounts of rCB improved stiffness, fatigue performance, and resistance to moisture and permanent deformation, offering a viable alternative to hydrated lime, which faces supply chain constraints and a high carbon footprint.

Behaviour and Design of LSF Truss Floor-Ceiling Systems Under Ambient and Fire Conditions
Supervisors
- Professor Mahadeva Mahendran (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Anthony Ariyanayagam (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
Thin-walled cold-formed steel truss floors are vulnerable to member buckling, connection eccentricities, and rapid thermal softening during fire, demanding careful fire safe design. This research investigated the structural and fire behaviour of light-gauge steel-framed (LSF) truss floor systems through short-span and full-scale ambient temperature and fire tests, and finite element simulations. It has significantly improved the knowledge of the behaviour and design of all commonly used LSF truss floor systems under ambient and fire conditions and provided their fire resistance levels. The findings can be utilized by fire engineers to design fire-safe LSF truss floor systems in mid-rise buildings.

Thesis Title
Performance of Flexible Pavements on Soft Subgrades with Multi-Layer Geogrid Reinforcement
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Chaminda Gallage (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Leslie Dawes (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis investigates the performance of single and multi-layer geogrid-reinforced pavements on weak subgrades through large-scale tests and a full-scale field trial. Results show geogrid layers significantly reduce rutting (up to 64%), enhance stiffness, and improve long-term structural capacity. Double-layer reinforcement outperforms single-layer systems, with minimum spacing of 150mm. Plate Load test, PANDA® DCP test and FWD test effectively detected geogrid improvements, while LWD test did not. Geogrid stabilisation could effectively mitigate surface cracking on expansive soils. Modified Austroads Empirical design charts and CIRCLY-based models were developed for designing single and multi-layer geogrid stabilised pavements.

Thesis Title
Desiccation Shrinkage and Cracking Modelling of Expansive Soil Using XFEM
Supervisors
- Dr Yilin Gui (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor John Banks (Mentoring Supervisor)
Citation
Desiccation-induced cracking in soils poses significant challenges to geotechnical and geoenvironmental engineering, often damaging earthen structures. This thesis advances understanding of drying shrinkage and cracking mechanisms and proposes a novel numerical modelling approach to estimate and correlate cracking damage. Experimental data were used to develop a comprehensive model that incorporates drying shrinkage and tensile cracking in expansive soils. The unique numerical model was validated against laboratory and field experiments, offering valuable insights into the role of material properties, and external forces. The further application of this research enhances soil-supported structures durability by providing a robust framework for simulating desiccation cracking.

Estimating Rainfall Losses Using Physical Catchment Characteristics
Supervisors
- Associate Professor Weerawickramage Egodawatta (Principal Supervisor)
- Associate Professor Lucy Reading (Associate Supervisor)
- Dr Marc Miska (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This research developed new methods to improve flood prediction by directly linking rainfall infiltration losses to measurable catchment features such as soil type, and land cover. Using a portable rainfall simulator, over 75 field experiments were conducted in southeast Queensland to capture how different landscapes absorb rainfall. The results were used to create equations and high-resolution maps that more accurately represent real conditions in flood models. This physically based approach reduces reliance on calibration and provides more reliable tools for managing flood risk.

Thesis Title
A Physics-Based Mathematical Model for Predicting Quality Changes During Drying of Plant-Based Food Materials
Supervisors
- Professor Azharul Karim (Principal Supervisor)
- Dr Zachary Welsh (Associate Supervisor)
Citation
This thesis proposes a novel theoretical quality model for predicting physical changes during drying of plant-based food materials utilizing the outcomes of comprehensive drying model and mechanistic deformation model. The shrinkage model developed in this study confers new insight into the approach of correlating shrinkage kinetics with solid structure mobility considering physicochemical state variation during drying. Key physical quality attributes such as fracture, case hardening, and physicochemical changes have been predicted using temperature-moisture from multiphase drying model and viscoelastic stress-strain distributions from shrinkage model. The developed framework will provide new insights for evaluating dried product quality and optimising drying processes.
