This thesis explores how older adults living independently engage with AI-enabled social technologies designed to support social connection and wellbeing. Through three qualitative studies involving technology probes, co-design workshops, and online community participation, the research examines how trust, companionship, anonymity, and emotional safety shape digital interactions. Findings show that older adults view AI companions as supportive tools rather than replacements for human relationships. The thesis contributes three conceptual models (the Cycle of Trust, Anonymity–Identity Continuum, and Anonymous Intimacy and Reciprocal Trust framework) to guide the design of trustworthy, inclusive, and emotionally safe social technologies for older adults.

This thesis investigated how relational technologies could support social engagement and reinforce personhood among people with mild dementia. Using a participatory qualitative approach across three studies, it examined relational challenges in informal caregiving, social participation in Memory Café settings, and the potential of AI voice assistants to facilitate meaningful conversation. The findings revealed key relational needs, evolving social roles, and design opportunities for supporting identity and social connection. The research contributed empirical insights and design frameworks for Human–Computer Interaction, including the co-designed LetsTalk voice assistant, advancing relation-centred technological approaches that promoted personhood, inclusion, and social well-being in dementia care.

It examines how small changes to input records can cause these systems to make incorrect decisions, and establishes new ways to define, measure, and defend against such vulnerabilities. The research proposes a set of properties that describe what makes such changes realistic in structured data, where each field carries specific meaning and constraints. It then benchmarks existing learning methods against these properties and introduces a new technique using generative modelling that produces more realistic test cases.

As biological sequence repositories continue to expand, existing indexing methods struggle to balance search accuracy, scalability, and storage efficiency, particularly for long and highly similar sequences. This thesis develops WOMBAT, a hierarchical probabilistic indexing framework that improves clustering quality and retrieval performance while substantially accelerating query time on large-scale biological datasets. The study introduces chunk-MMW minimiser signatures, the Minimiser Bloom Tree (MBT), and a two-stage design that combines global filtering with selective refinement. Across simulated and real datasets, the framework demonstrates a practical balance between discrimination, index size, and computational cost, supporting faster, scalable search for biological sequence collections.

Fire, Fauna and Management Interventions: Understanding Biodiversity and Functional Group Responses to Fire Regimes in a North Queensland Tropical Savanna

This thesis examined how fire shapes vertebrate communities in tropical savannas by integrating a global systematic review with empirical studies at Yourka Reserve, Australia. The meta-analysis showed that fire impacts are generally trait- and season-mediated for mammals and birds. Field studies using camera traps and acoustic monitoring showed that ecological responses varied with habitat structure, species traits, and fire context, with prescribed burns being much more benign than incidental wildfire. Overall, fire-driven heterogeneity and biological traits jointly structure savanna vertebrate communities, and should be considered in future fire management.

This thesis investigates how Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML)-based clinical decision support systems can be designed to align with intensive care clinicians’ values and needs. It takes a value-sensitive and tension-aware approach, showing how tensions in ICU decision-making signal complexity, potential trade-offs and limitations of AIML support. Insights gained from interviews and prototyping demonstrate that AIML based tools are most supportive when contextually anchored, integrated into existing workflows, and positioned as a tool that complements existing processes and devices. Within data science, this research offers a relational, context-sensitive and tension-aware approach of thinking for problem formulation.

Business process execution data is commonly stored in event logs, which are essential for analysing process performance. However, IoT data and event logs are maintained in different systems and at different granularities, making direct integration for analysis challenging. This thesis focuses on identifying IoT data that is relevant to business processes and integrating it into event logs. The resulting IoT-enriched event logs enable process analysis and provide a foundation for the real-time data integration required by digital twins of real-world processes.

Quantitative Motion Analysis of the Left Atrium in Patients with Atrial Fibrillation from Cardiac CT

Atrial fibrillation affects millions of people and damages the heart’s left atrium, but current scans cannot clearly measure how this chamber moves and deforms during each heartbeat. This thesis developed and validated a new computer-based method to accurately track left atrial motion from four-dimensional cardiac CT images. Using an advanced image analysis technique called Digital Volume Correlation, the research improved motion tracking stability, handled large deformations over time, and increased accuracy near complex heart boundaries. The framework provides a non-invasive way to measure atrial function and may support better diagnosis and treatment planning for patients with atrial fibrillation.
