QUT is driving innovation in precision fermentation with the QUT Pioneer BioPilot – a state-of-the-art facility designed to fast-track the development and commercialisation of next-generation bio-based products.
Located in the bioeconomy heartland of northern Australia, Mackay’s Pioneer Valley, this purpose-built hub connects research excellence with industry to unlock new opportunities for sustainable growth.
Powered by QUT’s world-class research expertise, the scale-up facility is at the forefront of real-world innovation, enabling the path to scale and produce high-value functional ingredients and industrial products that are safe, ethical and sustainable.
Strategically located next to a major sugar mill and refinery, and in the centre of a biomanufacturing priority development area, the facility strengthens Australia’s unique position in building a thriving bioeconomy, leveraging the nation’s abundant biological resources to accelerate commercialisation and global competitiveness.
Our capabilities
Since 2010, QUT has operated Australia’s bioeconomy pilot plant, recently transformed through a major refurbishment funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments, in association with Australia’s Food and Beverage Accelerator and QUT. This upgrade has significantly expanded the facility’s capabilities, extending beyond biomanufacturing technologies and commercial investment in bioprocessing and biofuels to now include pilot-scale precision fermentation.
The facility harnesses precision fermentation to produce high-value food and industrial products such as proteins, whole cells, enzymes and industrial chemicals. Our key capabilities include:
- certified containment facility, allowing rapid approvals for precision fermentation of recombinant organisms
- food-grade facility for manufacturing research products
- flexible facility design for various microbial expression systems
- industrial downstream processes for purification and product drying
- development of alternative feedstock, including sucrose and biomass extracts
- in-process QC and access to leading edge analytics
- strain engineering and lab-scale fermentation
- biomass processing, milling and thermochemical conversion
- biorefining pilot plant including SAF and hydrotreating
- adjacent to the emerging biomanufacturing industries in northern Australia.
