What is the purpose of this research?
This research aims to better understand how preschool-aged children (4-5 years) use digital technologies and how parents support them to be safe online. We are interested in learning about children's online experiences, the strategies families use to support safe technology use, and the factors that help young children develop the skills and confidence to navigate digital environments safely. The findings will help inform practical resources and guidance for parents, early childhood educators, and others who support young children's online safety and wellbeing.
Are you looking for people like me?
We are looking for parents or legal guardians of children aged 4-5 years who live in the Greater Brisbane area, including Brisbane, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redlands and the Gold Coast.
Your child should regularly use digital technologies such as smartphones, tablet computers, online games, apps or videos, computers.
Both you and your child will be invited to take part in the study.
What will you ask me to do?
If you choose to take part, you will be invited to participate in a 30-40 minute interview with the researcher. The interview can take place in person, by Zoom, or by Microsoft Teams, whichever is most convenient for you.
Your child will also be invited to take part in a 20-30 minute play-based conversation with the researcher. During this session, children may use activities such as drawing, puppets, role play and book-making to share their ideas and experiences. The conversation can take place at your home, a local library meeting room, or the Children's Technology Centre at QUT Kelvin Grove, depending on what is most convenient for your family.
With your permission, the interviews will be audio recorded, and photographs may be taken of your child's creations (such as drawings or books they make). No photographs will be taken of you or your child.
Are there any risks for me in taking part?
The risks associated with taking part in this study are low. Some parents may feel uncomfortable reflecting on their child's online experiences or their own approaches to managing technology use. You do not have to answer any question that makes you uncomfortable, and you can stop the interview at any time.
Young children may become tired or lose interest during the conversation. The researcher is an experienced early childhood educator and will adapt activities to suit each child. Children can take a break or stop participating at any time.
Taking part will also require some of your time. Interviews will be arranged at a time and location that is convenient for your family.
Are there any benefits for me in taking part?
While there may be no direct personal benefit from taking part, you will have the opportunity to share your experiences and contribute to research that aims to improve understanding of how young children stay safe online. The findings will help inform resources and guidance for parents, early childhood educators, and others who support children's online safety and wellbeing.
As a thank you for participating, you will receive a $50 digital Prezzee gift card. Children who take part will be able to choose a small LEGO set.
Will I be compensated for my time?
Parents who participate will receive a $50 digital Prezzee gift card as a thank you for their time. Children who participate will be able to choose a small LEGO set. Parking at QUT will also be paid for if you attend in person and require it.
