What is the purpose of this research?

This research project is being conducted as part of a PhD student research project for Dana Trenaman. The purpose of the project to better understand children’s video gaming experiences by learning more about how parents and carers experiences and the role they play in supporting safe and positive experiences.

Whether you're setting screen time limits, playing together, monitoring games, or taking a more hands-off approach, your experiences are valuable.

Are you looking for people like me?

We are looking for parents or carers (18+) of children who are aged 7-10 years old who play video games for at least 3 hours per week and live in Australia.

What will you ask me to do?

You will be asked to complete a short 20–25-minute online survey. The questions will ask about your child’s video gaming, how you manage it, your confidence in managing it and in your child’s ability, your level of concern about various negative situations, and whether your child has had any negative experiences. You will also have the option to share your thoughts on what could help make video gaming safer for children.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

We will be asking you to spend 20-25 minutes of your time answering our questions online.

We expect there will be minimal risks for taking part in our research; however, some of the questions will ask you about how you feel about negative online situations and about your child’s negative video gaming experiences, if they have had any.

Participation is voluntary, and you do not need to answer any questions that you do not feel comfortable answering.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

Other than the opportunity to enter a prize draw upon completion of the survey, there are no direct benefits for taking part in our research. However, your participation may benefit other parents and children in the future, as it will help us better understand parents’ experiences with children and video games.

Will I be compensated for my time?

Upon completion of the survey you will be forwarded to a separate page where you can provide an email address for entry into a prize draw for the opportunity to win 1 of 4 $50 Prezzee e-gift cards.

I am interested - what should I do next?

To participate, please follow the Qualtrics link below, which will take you to the full information about the study.

At the bottom, you will have the opportunity to answer “yes” to consent. You will then be redirected to the survey.
