How should we respond when a friend is experiencing relationship difficulties?

What is the purpose of this research?

This is a PhD research study that aims to concept-test messages about how people might respond when they become aware of a close friend experiencing difficulties in their relationship.

Are you looking for people like me?

You are invited to participate in this research project if you:

• live in Queensland
• are 18 years or older
• are able to read and speak comfortably in English
• do not have focused professional expertise in domestic violence and have not worked in a domestic violence organisation
• have not taken part in a previous study of this project before.

What will you ask me to do?

Take part in a 60-minute focus group at QUT. You’ll be shown message concepts, complete a brief survey, and share your views in a group discussion.

Are there any risks for me in taking part?

There are some risks associated with your participation in this research project. Given the focus on romantic relationships, there is a possibility that domestic violence or abuse may be discussed. Domestic violence is a sensitive topic, and it is possible that such discussions may cause participants to experience and/or revisit discomfort or distress. If you feel concerned that this may occur, please consider if you are comfortable in participating.

It should be noted that if you do agree to participate, you can discontinue participation at any time without comment or penalty. However, it will not be possible to withdraw your data from the research project.

Are there any benefits for me in taking part?

It is expected that this research project will not benefit you directly. However, the study aims to gain a greater understanding of community views towards romantic relationships and may lead to the development of awareness-raising initiatives to promote respectful relationships. You can request a brief summary of the outcomes of the study by providing your first name and email address in the consent form.

Will I be compensated for my time?

Yes. You will receive an AUD $50 GiftPay e-Gift Card for attending the focus group. Drinks and snacks will be provided.
