Queensland University of Technology (QUT) researchers from the QUT Centre for Materials Science, have taken a major step towards making renewable energy more affordable and sustainable, with the first commercial launch of ultra-low cost, flexible perovskite solar cells.
Led by Professor Hongxia Wang, the multidisciplinary team includes QUT alumnus Dr Yang Yang, who completed his PhD at QUT in 2021 and has continued to play a key role in advancing the technology from laboratory research to commercial application. Together, the team developed a patented carbon-based electrode that replaces expensive gold and silver, making perovskite solar cells cheaper, more stable and commercially viable.
In partnership with Halocell and First Graphene, this innovation has now moved from laboratory discovery to real-world application, positioning perovskite solar cells as a game-changing complement to traditional silicon technology in the global push for clean energy.
The launch of Halocell’s commercial perovskite modules in 2025 marked a critical milestone for renewable energy innovation in Australia. These flexible, lightweight panels offer a cost-effective alternative to conventional silicon cells, opening new possibilities for solar power integration- from rooftops and portable devices to large-scale solar farms. With improved resistance to moisture and environmental degradation, QUT’s carbon-based design provides a practical pathway towards long-lasting, high-performance solar technology that can accelerate the world’s transition to a low-carbon future.
