QUT acting graduate and talent behind popular Packed to the Rafters character Jack Barton, James Stewart will be vying the for Most Popular New Male Talent in this year's Logie awards, announced Sunday (May 2).

The former member of Brisbane band george and Shakespearian artiste graduated from Queensland University of Technology's Bachelor of Fine Arts (Acting) in 1999 and is well-remembered and regarded by his lecturers, said QUT acting studio head Dianne Eden.

"He would rehearse all day in acting studio and burst out into the rock scene, writing, playing and singing all night," Ms Eden said.

"He brings a lovely gravitas to his characters. He plays with a generous heart which the audience instantly senses.

"I think it is his turn to win the Silver Logie for Most Popular New Male Talent. He has shown unassailable talent and has given that show another irresistible actor."

James, (who is not to be mistaken for his identical twin and George band mate Nick), was well known as a fine Shakespearian actor before being snapped up by the highly rated television show in February last year.

James said the leap from stage to TV was challenging.

"One thing I've found different between theatre and television, is that with television such a close medium, the viewer gets to see the truth in your eyes, whereas with theatre you have to bring it into the whole body all the time," James said.

"But whether in front of a camera or a theatre audience, listening is the key to all good acting."

His lecturer Ms Eden said James and brother Nick still return to their roots as guest director and guest musical director for acting at QUT.

The 52nd annual TV Week Logie Awards is aired on Nine Network on Sunday, May 2.

James will be up against Charlie Pickering (The 7PM Project/Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation), Matt Preston (MasterChef Australia), Josh Thomas (Talkin' 'Bout Your Generation) and Luke Mitchell (Home And Away) for Most Popular New Male Talent.
