Philanthropist Laurie Cowled is more accustomed to giving than receiving, so it was a welcome surprise for the Queensland University of Technology supporter when she was honoured with the 2012 Award for Outstanding Philanthropic Support of Higher Education.
The award, from the Business-Higher Education Round Table (B-HERT), recognises Ms Cowled's ongoing relationship with QUT and its students, as well as her support of a number of other institutions and organisations.
It was presented at a gala event in Melbourne this month by Senator Chris Evans, the Federal Minister for Tertiary Education, Skills, Science and Research.
QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Peter Coaldrake said Ms Cowled had demonstrated an enduring relationship with the University and ongoing support of QUT's students.
Professor Coaldrake said Ms Cowled supported a number of educational scholarships at QUT for gifted indigenous and socially and economically disadvantaged women to achieve their potential through tertiary education.
"Ms Cowled's support in this area is a testament to her immense respect for education and her passion for ensuring the young women of Australia receive a quality education, even if they cannot afford it through their own means," he said.
"This award also highlights Ms Cowled's leadership in altering attitudes to the merits of supporting higher education through personal advocacy.
"Through her gifts to QUT she has welcomed the opportunity to share her love of giving and her view of education as a fundamental right for all Australians."
Ms Cowled's involvement with the University extends far beyond financial support. Through the selection and awarding process, she meets and encourages many of the recipients - aiding in building the award winners' self-esteem and personal pride.
The B-HERT awards are presented annually and recognise outstanding achievement in collaboration between business and higher education in the fields of research and development, and education and training.
They aim to highlight at a national level the benefits of such collaboration and enhance links between industry and universities.
