Westpac Group Chief Executive Officer Anthony Miller has been named a QUT Outstanding Alumnus for 2025, recognising his leadership in banking and finance and his commitment to innovation and corporate responsibility.
The honour was announced last night at the annual QUT Outstanding Alumni Awards at the university’s Gardens Point campus in Brisbane.
QUT Vice-Chancellor Professor Margaret Sheil said the Outstanding Alumnus Award celebrated Mr Miller’s visionary leadership and deep expertise within the financial sector, as well as his unwavering commitment to corporate social responsibility and broader community initiatives.
“His advocacy not only drives positive change but serves as an inspiring example of how education empowers leaders to shape a better future,” Professor Sheil said.
Mr Miller graduated from QUT in 1992 with a Bachelor of Laws as part of a program that enabled him to complete an Asian Studies degree at Griffith University simultaneously.
He said he was very proud to be recognised as an Outstanding Alumnus by QUT.
“It’s an absolute honour to receive this award,” Mr Miller said.
“To this day I feel indebted to QUT for the world of possibility that this institution opened up to me.
“My studies gave me a global view of Australia’s place in the world while also teaching me a lesson that’s been valuable in every stage of my career since – understanding what drives people is the key to every conversation and fosters mutual respect in business and in life.”
Reflecting on his time at QUT, Mr Miller said how grateful he was for having studied at QUT.
“My days there were the most enjoyable that I can remember,” he said.
Mr Miller said he enjoyed the opportunities for studying at university offered him, from innovative courses to extracurricular activities.
“My strongest advice to people at university is to participate in every aspect of life at university,” he said.
“It's not about just doing the course and qualifying with that vocational study.
It's about immersing yourself in the life at QUT or at any university, studying, experimenting, trying new things, meeting new people.”
“Remember, it's really not necessarily the vocational aspect of university, but it's the way you are taught to think and the way you are taught to be critical and analytical, that is the real advantage of university.”
Mr Miller began his career as an article clerk Brisbane.
Before joining Westpac in 2020, Mr Miller was CEO of Deutsche Bank in Australia and New Zealand for three years.
He spent 16 years at Goldman Sachs, during which time he was promoted to Partner and led Goldman Sachs’ Asian finance division.
As a strong advocate for corporate social responsibility, Mr Miller is a member of the Council of the Australian Banking Association and holds directorships with the Institute of International Finance and the Financial Markets Foundation for Children.
