Grab your friends and lace up your shoes – the 2023 QUT Classic is fast approaching and this year features the inaugural 1km ‘Campus Dash’.

The annual QUT Classic fun run will be held on Sunday, May 7, with registrations closing May 3.

The Classic is run (or walked) over three distances – a 10km race, a 5km race, and the new 1km Campus Dash course.  Last year, around 1000 people took part.

“The Campus Dash will take in the twists and turns of our picturesque Gardens Point campus in the CBD and also go along the edge of the City Botanic Gardens,” said Tom Fisher from QUT Sport.

“It’s a 1km course that is a perfect family-friendly event for everyone.

“For those who want to test themselves, our 5km and 10km routes head out towards Kangaroo Point, taking in Brisbane City, the Botanic Gardens and Brisbane River views.

“Our 10km route also goes under the iconic Story Bridge, with all three courses finishing along QUT’s Main Drive.”

Mr Fisher said the day would include live entertainment, prizes, giveaways and activities – and proceeds from race registrations would go to a great cause.

“We’ll be raising money for the QUT Learning Potential Fund, which helps low-income students,” he said.

“The fund’s scholarships and bursaries are really important financial assistance and can often make the difference between students being able to afford to go to uni or not.”

QUT Sport runs a variety of sports events for the university, including the QUT Classic, and caters for abilities ranging from students and staff who want to be part of social sports to those who are elite athletes.

QUT sport leaders Bryan Kidd, Ryan Marsh and Maeghan Saldumbide are excited about the upcoming Campus Dash.

Some of the university’s students are also on the QUT Sport team, including Bryan Kidd, Ryan Marsh and Maeghan Saldumbide, who all work as sport leaders.

Bryan is studying a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science, Ryan is doing a double degree in engineering and science, and Maeghan is doing a double degree in science and law.

Ryan is also a member of QUT’s Elite Athlete Program.

“My sport is triathlon and at the QUT Classic I’m planning to run in either the 10km or 5km race,” he said.

Sport leaders at QUT have a variety of roles, including assisting at events, refereeing social sport and working at the uni’s sports facilities.

“My role as a sports leader at QUT involves me refereeing various social sport competitions held at the uni,” Maeghan said.

“I absolutely love all things sport and hope to participate in the QUT Classic event in future years whilst undertaking my degree.”

Bryan, who is running in the QUT Classic’s 5km event, is combining his final-year studies at QUT with being heavily involved in the Brisbane volleyball community as a referee, player and coach.

“As a QUT sport leader, I've also been involved in pop-up sport, social sport and Uni Games programs,” he said.
