QUT graduate Jasmine Beech shares her journey on where her double degree in marketing and communication has taken her.

Jasmine studied a double degree in Business (Marketing) and Communication and is now Head of Sales Research and Insights at Southern Cross Austereo (SCA), an Australian group of media companies including digital, radio, and TV.

What is your current role?

My role is to deliver insightful and relevant research to teams at SCA, with a particular focus on the commercial side of the business. I manage a team of nine people, including some of my very own QUT interns!

What are some career highlights?

Every day is different, and I have a really amazing team. I love the variety my job allows. One day I could be researching millennials and the next trying to understand the path to purchase a car! My team and I were thrilled to be awarded Vision Critical’s Business Transformation Award for Asia Pacific. As a result, I was lucky enough to travel to Washington DC and present at their North America conference. It was a fantastic experience to not only learn from other brands, but also show off what we have been doing in Australia.

How did you end up in your current position?

When I was in my final year at QUT I did an internship in the research department at SCA. Having studied marketing at uni I always thought I wanted to follow the more traditional marketing path, but through work experiences I discovered I loved understanding and researching people and using that to help drive strategy for brands. The internship led to a casual job, and when I graduated they offered me a full-time job.

What made you choose QUT?

I really liked the fact that QUT always focused on real-world experience. For me that was so important. I didn’t want to get to the end of my degree and have no idea what was waiting for me in the real world. Also, as one of the only universities that offers courses in media, it was a no-brainer. The emphasis on practical learning was most beneficial for me, including the internship programQUTopia in strategic marketing.

Any advice to students entering the workforce?

When you step into your first role, you are never going to know everything! You will need to learn new skills, programs, and ways of working so you need to be prepared to learn. You also need to be prepared to work with others and build positive team cultures. All of the experiences you go through at uni will help prepare you on how to handle scenarios you are going to face in the real world.
