The QUT Law Founders’ Scholarship was established in 1997 by a group of dedicated alumni, staff, and members of the legal community. For the founders, the scholarship represents an investment in the next generation of legal professionals.
More than 25 years on, the scholarship has helped close to 100 students pursue their legal education, and by extension, career paths they never thought possible.
Recent recipient, Emily Thai, said the scholarship was a real turning point for her.
“Receiving the Law Founders’ Scholarship has been instrumental in setting me up for my legal career.”
While the scholarship eased the financial pressure and allowed Emily to focus on her studies, the mentorship experience had the greatest impact.
“It also provided me with the opportunity to have a mentor which has been the highlight. Being paired with a barrister has given me a rare opportunity to gain real-world legal experience early in my degree—something many students don’t get until much later. The network I’ve built through this mentorship has already led to multiple job opportunities, and I know it will continue to support me throughout my career.”
While Emily is just starting out, many recipients have gone on to establish successful careers, continuing the legacy of support by becoming mentors and advocates.
Raziq Qasmi is one of these recipients.
“Escaping a country devastated by decades of war and terror has fuelled my passion for justice, equity and freedom. QUT Law Founders' Scholarship has provided me with great financial support, making my dream of studying law a reality.”
Now a Senior Legal Officer for the Department of Transport and Main Roads, as well as a Sessional Academic at QUT, Raziq embodies the long-term vision for the scholarship. His success demonstrates how the program continues to grow its impact through each generation of graduates.
Last year, The Honourable Chief Justice Helen Bowskill (QUT alumna) was appointed as patron of the scholarship, reinforcing its strong connection to the legal and alumni community.
The Law Founders’ Scholarship is just one example of the strong legacy that exists within the QUT community, tying together alumni, staff, and students. It has helped to build a lasting culture of support, mentorship, and opportunity. Every student it touches is a new chapter in that story.
