Fifteen years ago, Dr David Moffatt, and David Pradella were among many alumni who donated to establish the Su Mon Wong Scholarship for Excellence in Marketing. Named in honour of former QUT marketing lecturer, Su Mon Wong, the scholarship celebrates a mentor who inspired hundreds of students during his 34 years at the university.

We reached out to these alumni to discuss the scholarship’s enduring legacy.

Su Mon Wong was more than a lecturer to us and hundreds of other QUT students. His passion for marketing and unwavering belief in us helped shape who we became as professionals and human beings. Creating the scholarship was our way of continuing that legacy.

The scholarship supports students in their final year of study and is unique in that it recognises the person behind the grades, awarding those who demonstrate the passion for marketing that Su Mon always encouraged and displayed himself.

Since its inception, 18 student recipients have received financial support and invaluable mentorship. One of last year’s scholars, Tara McCarthy, perfectly captures this.

“From the moment I applied, I knew this scholarship was more than just financial support—it was a recognition of my efforts, aspirations, and potential in marketing. Reflecting on the past year, the opportunities that have unfolded are nothing short of extraordinary,” says Tara.

Fellow recipient Jemma Curtis echoed her sentiment.

“This scholarship has not only been a recognition of my efforts but has also opened up an incredible pathway filled with opportunities and growth…The impact of this scholarship extends far beyond the individual recipient—it helps build a community of driven, passionate marketers ready to make their mark on the world.”

We receive feedback like this each year, and it never fails to drive home why supporting the scholarship matters. It’s inspiring to see new recipients taking that first step into their futures with the confidence and clarity that Su Mon gave us.

Although he retired in 2009, Su Mon Wong's influence remains present in each generation of QUT marketing students. We’re all incredibly proud of what this scholarship has become, the lives it has influenced, and the opportunity it provides to honour Su Mon Wong’s remarkable legacy.
